Position Summary

The Science/STEM specialist provides support to middle school science and integrative STEM education in coordination with 6-8 science teachers.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of five years of successful teaching and leadership experience in public education.
  • Experience teaching various science content (life science, physical science and earth science)
  • Experience with Integrative STEM education
  • Eligible for Collegiate Professional license with an endorsement in the assigned field of instruction (preferred endorsement in Administration and Supervision).
  • Leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with diverse populations of students, teachers, parents, administrators, and the community.
  • Strong planning and organizations skills with the ability to manage multiple projects
  • Experience collecting, visualizing, and acting on student formative assessment data to alter instruction and student learning outcomes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instruction and curriculum development, current theory, instructional practices, and various assessment strategies
  • Experience working with diverse learning needs.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite, email, and information system applications.
  • Proficiency in the use of a variety of office equipment and technology with experience using
  • Proficiency in business English: spelling, grammar, and spoken language.
  • Emotionally mature, objective, and sensitive to people and their concerns. Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, administration, co-workers, and the community.
  • Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Familiarity with racial equity and inclusion frameworks Models non-discriminatory and cultural inclusion practices in all activities. Respects the worth, dignity, and individual beliefs of others.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments to improve instructional practices

Essential Functions

  • Model and co-teach with middle school Science teachers during science instruction and I-STEM units
  • Create STEM curriculum and coordinate the purchasing of materials, preparing materials and organization of the materials
  • Meet with teachers during weekly Community Learning Team meetings to support instruction in Science and STEM instruction (creation of science supports and materials as determined by the CLT)
  • Collaborate with Science/STEM specialists at sister middle school
  • Meet and collaborate with HCPS STEM director and science administrator and instructional support team
  • Monitor and revise assessments and provide data analysis for science assessments
  • Plan and Coordinate after-school science remediation
  • Facilitate STEM events and science-related activities and clubs
  • Takes all industry standard precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Serves as a role model by developing and effectively maintaining professional boundaries with students and staff at all times. Ensures respect for the ethical and legal duties in the staff-to-student and administrator-to-staff relationships.
  • Serves as a role model for others, as an educational leader, by demonstrating good attendance, punctuality, appearance, demeanor, dress and behavior.
  • Models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions, including non-discriminatory and cultural inclusion practices by respecting the worth, dignity and individual beliefs of others.Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.
  • Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
  • Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
  • Maintains confidentiality when appropriate.
  • Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations, procedures, and the HCPS Strategic Plan.
  • Effectively performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Physical Demands / Work Environment

Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students, staff, and community members. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; and subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Occasional travel with students on field trips as necessary. Attendance at evening and weekend student or staff activities, Parent Teacher Organization meetings, and other functions, as required. Regular contact with staff members and parents/guardians is required. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
