About The Department

Montgomery County Department of Recreation is a nationally recognized and award-winning agency with a mission to provide high quality, diverse, and accessible community-based programs, activities and services that serve the recreation and leisure needs of the Montgomery County community.The department manages 39 facilities including recreation centers, senior centers, and indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities and provides thousands of programs such as out-of-school activities, aquatics, classes, youth and adult sports programs and leagues, senior programs, and therapeutic recreation.

About The Position

The Department is seeking a dynamic and experienced, full-time (40-hour per week) Recreation Coordinator, whose skills and knowledge will be utilized to support community, neighborhood and county-wide special events and assist with managing the department warehouse. The responsibilities include but are not limited to organizing, administering, coordinating, and facilitating a range of community and specialized recreational program activities that are limited in scope, size, and complexity. The individual is also responsible for ensuring warehouse access during set hours and for DGS services, maintaining a safe and organized warehouse, assisting in supply receiving, storing, inventorying and distribution, and recruiting, training, supervising, and recommending placement of seasonal, part-time and volunteer staff.

This Work Includes

  • Ensuring compliance with the rules on the use of the facility and equipment
  • Developing and conducting surveys and program evaluations
  • Recruiting, training, supervising, and recommending placement of seasonal staff and volunteers
  • Participating in the planning and execution of community and county-wide events and specialized recreational programs and activities
  • Maintaining scheduled use of the facility using recreation-specific activities software, such as Active and RecTrac
  • Assisting with program implementation by coordinating and scheduling equipment, safety, and security needs, and permitting
  • Setting-up, breaking-down, transporting, storing, maintaining and/or repairing relevant equipment
  • Monitoring event operations, general facility/grounds activities and assuring clean-up
  • Instructing and/or leading recreation programs and activities as assigned
  • Assisting with warehouse support by receiving, storing, inventorying and distribution of supplies
  • Ensuring warehouse is accessible during set hours and communicating closures when needed
  • Knowledge of county polices, rules, regulations, procedures and county, state, and federal laws

Additional Information

As a supervisor/organizer of unionized employees, this position has responsibility for fostering a positive labor relations environment based on mutual trust, respect, and cooperation; maintaining stability of seasonal employees by modeling desired behaviors through consistent and positive work ethic, and by advocating on behalf of the management team; and have the responsibility for motivating and providing direction and guidance to employees through clear articulation of work projects, goals and related services.

The selected candidate will be required to complete a background investigation and a medical history review prior to appointment.

This position requires work during non- traditional hours to include early mornings, evenings/nights, weekends, and holidays; will require work that involves physical demands such as heavy lifting, occasionally working outdoors in varying weather and extreme temperatures; and the ability to attend activities and meetings or perform work at locations outside of an assigned facility.

To ensure a positive workplace and to comply with federal, state and County laws, the incumbent is responsible for completing mandatory trainings within the first three to six months or within the specified timeframe.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:

Experience: One (1) year of recreation work experience involving planning, organizing, and directing recreational activities or special interest recreation program activities/services.

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree.

Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

  • Planning and organizing a wide variety of activities and/or special events.
  • Knowledge of recreation methods, procedures, practices, and regulations.
  • Working in recreation and community settings, and experience monitoring, maintaining, and collecting equipment and information.
  • Leading the work of employees and volunteers.
  • Ability to drive county vehicles to include but not limited to cars, vans, and trucks.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite and ACTIVE, RecTrac or other database software applications.
