Philosophy

The intent of our Pre-doctoral Externship at the Ottile Campus, SCO Family of Services is to provide a broadly based training program to move Externs on toward preparation for post-graduate practice. Training is developmentally sequenced, experiential, and utilizes multiple intervention modalities. All training is supported by intensive supervision, campus experiences, and a commitment to life-long learning.

Our externship is designed to prepare ethical and multi-culturally sensitive professional clinicians who can move with competence, creativity and flexibility into a variety of positions providing clinical, consultation, and outreach services to adolescents, children, and families, in groups and outpatient settings.

We are looking for applicants who have shown themselves through their practicum placements that they are curious, eager to learn and engage, and flexible in their thinking and approaches to clinical service. As an organization we value and respect cultural and individual differences, and we seek interns with expressed interest in continued personal and professional growth in these areas.

Externship Counseling/Clinical Services

This externship requires a commitment of approximately 16 hours/week,time is divided between individual/group counseling, attending medication review, team meetings and assessment. With regard to clinical work, externs will work with a diverse group of adolescents ages 14 to 21 years who have been diagnosed with mild mental retardation/severe learning disabilities and a serious mental illness. There will be 2 supervision hours/week, to be scheduled at the convenience of extern and supervisor. Externs are expected to see a minimum of 2-3 individual cases which can change throughout the duration of externship. In addition, externs will at any given time run a minimum of one group, which will be reflective of both the extern's interest and client need. Ample testing opportunities are available.

Required level of readiness (any prior experiences or level of training required for applicants):

Applicants should have completed courses in assessment.

Locations

The Ottilie Residential Treatment Facility (RTF) is located on six acres in the heart of Queens. It is the only OMH residential facility that exclusively serves adolescents and young adults with a serious emotional disturbance as well as developmental delays. The 24-hour facility provides the most intensive residential mental health services available outside of a hospital. The Ottilie RTF offers a highly structured, therapeutic setting that focuses on strengthening family connections, providing a trauma sensitive approach to treatment and preparing the youth to return to their communities. Residents attend the Theresa Paplin School, an ungraded, non-diploma bound New York State special education school.
