Position Summary



The New Business Manager position will work alongside leadership and support the Global Director with matter review and high-level conflict-of-interest analysis. They will be an escalation point for the Tampa team on conflicts clearances. They will have line management responsibilities for the team which will include recruitment, training, performance management and oversight of workload management within Tampa. The position entails both independent decision-making and continuous interaction with the broader global conflicts and AML team that operates nearly 24/7.

General Counsel: New Business

White & Case opens more than 13,000 matter every year, or 1 matter per hour, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Playing a key role in assisting Partners and fee earners to identify potential conflicts of interest during new business intake, you will work at the heart of the Firm’s operations and as a trusted advisor to our lawyers.

Combining both sound commercial judgement and effective communication skills, you will support the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) in handling all aspects relating to incoming new business for new clients or existing clients. This includes conflict searches, opening entries, fee approvals and new matter activation. You will also handle many matter lifecycle aspects of an existing matter including changes to matter details, changes to the parties involved and all reactivation requests.

We are committed to clearing conflicts on incoming matters to provide expedited approval, and provide services from offices in London, Manila, New York, Paris and Tampa.

Duties And Accountabilities1

  • Perform all duties of New Business Supervisor.
  • Propose continuous long-range succession plans.
  • Identify and discuss individual goals and implement relevant soft-skills training for the department.
  • Oversee daily and long-range targets of Tampa CNB operations.
  • Provide overall strategic planning and innovation to achieve overall departmental goals and drive efficiencies.
  • Build effective relationship with global colleagues to ensure alignment on strategies and policies.
  • Help the team to understand how to work with stakeholders and partners/firm personnel to achieve best solutions and outcomes.
  • Provide stakeholders with regular reports on team achievements and overall state of Tampa for better understanding of things on the ground.
  • Act as the central source of communication between and among stakeholders and key contacts.
  • Co-lead annual evaluations for members of the CNB team and approve evaluations of the junior members of the team.
  • Conduct final interview of applicants with Senior Manager in Tampa.
  • Conduct mentoring of Conflicts Lawyers, New Business Attorneys and all Supervisors and Analysts in CNB.
  • Reviewing new business for a global partnership on an often-expedited basis to determine if the matter can be accepted.

  • Performs any other duties that may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • Good understanding of the US conflicts rules. Awareness of the UK conflicts rules is a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Experience at or currently employed at a reasonably-sized law firm.
  • International experience a plus.
  • Strong academic record and intellectual curiosity, creative thinker.
  • Ability to see the big picture to identify reputational risk concerns.
  • Good time management skills, ability to stay calm under pressure when juggling multiple tasks.
  • Client service focus and a team player.
  • Proactive, resourceful, takes initiative.
  • Fluency in English.
  • College graduate preferred.

Location & Reporting

This position is based in Tampa, with potential for occasional travel to Manila. The role reports to the Associate Director of New Business (Tampa) and indirectly to the Global Director (London).
