The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority Law Enforcement Department offers a Ride-Along Program to its applicants. This program allows potential candidates to accompany patrol officers while on duty. The program is an effort to provide a broad scope of police work done at the Raleigh-Durham Airport. The ride-along is for four hours. The RDU Police Officer will share a high-level overview of the department and answer any job-related questions. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

- Performs law enforcement duties to ensure airport security in Airfield Operations Area, remote parking lots and extended jurisdictions of airport property.
- Patrols airports campus in vehicles or on foot. Checks doors and windows and inspects security doors, gates, and other areas.
- Reports dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights or other hazards.
- Investigates unattended bags and other suspicious circumstances.
- Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, disputes and loud and disruptive behavior.
- Responds to TSA screening staff and makes determinations whether to detain or charge suspicious persons. Prepares non-transferrable item reports.
- Investigates traffic accidents, issues traffic citations, and directs traffic. Participates in emergency operation activities. Operates radar equipment to apprehend speeders and slow down traffic. Apprehends and processes criminal suspects.
- Performs investigations of accidents and incidents. Makes arrests and processes criminal suspects. Presents findings in court if necessary.
- Works with RDU Airport Fire-Rescue and Emergency Medical Technicians to provide medical care or crowd control services to sick or injured patients. Provides a chain of custody if a body needs to be removed from RDU Airport.
- Prepares records and incident reports.
- Provides customer service for passengers and vendors. Provides information, gives directions, and assists stranded motorists.
- Collects, safeguards, and returns found property to customers.
- Successfully complete annual mandatory training as required by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission
- Performs additional related work as required.
Education:

- High School diploma or equivalency
Required:
- Completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Training Course (BLET)
- 1 or more years of experience in as a sworn Law Enforcement Officer
Required:
- Valid NC Driver’s License
Knowledge of:
- Federal, state, and local laws and FAA requirements
- Law enforcement principles, practices, methods, and equipment
- Scientific crime detection, criminal identification methods, and procedures
- Airport locations and jurisdiction
- Basic injuries and treatment techniques
- Radio use and vernacular
- English grammar, spelling, punctuation
- Legal terminology and court procedures
- Principles and practices of basic bookkeeping
- Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment
- Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships.
- Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
- Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios
- Assigning, prioritizing, monitoring, and reviewing work assignments
- Build and maintain cooperative and effective public relations with the airport visitors and personnel.
- Handle difficult situations with tact and diplomacy.
- Act with sound judgment in routine and emergency situations
- Prepare clear and concise activity reports.
- Present effective court testimony
- Meet schedules and deadlines of the work.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files.

- Work may be performed indoors or outdoors in potentially adverse conditions on uneven ground in all types of weather. May periodically be exposed to loud sounds and distracting noise levels, such as from office equipment, machinery, and overhead and ground level aircraft noise. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemical, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, workspace restriction and vibrations.
