The Director provides leadership for safety strategy and activities across the North American business, including Supply Chain. This position is responsible for cost effectively implementing policies, procedures, management systems, and tools in support of safety excellence and will monitor site level performance, proactively identify opportunities for performance improvement and take appropriate corrective action. The role also will identify and act on potential EHS business risks, collaborate with Operations management and Environmental counterpart in the development of a strong EHS culture and collaborate with Mosaic’s Public Affairs, Mine Permitting, and Law organizations, consultants, and advisors related to ongoing or pending regulatory matters. This position will have high-level internal and external exposure as a representative of Mosaic.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct the safety operations teams across North America phosphate operations, potash operations and US Distribution. Directs continuous improvement of safety initiatives to reduce work process risks, raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practices. Contributes to the development of the health and safety strategy. Implement cost effective systems are in place to ensure compliance with both legal requirements and internal objectives. Proactively identify and address safety issues / concerns. Communicate routinely with key stakeholders throughout the organization. Play a leading role in the development of a strong EH&S culture within their area of responsibility including leadership in Mosaic Management Systems across the business unit. Work with other key business unit and functional partners to drive Process Safety performance improvement.
  • Foster a mindset of operational excellence. Review audit findings, monitor leading and lagging indicators, routinely visit operations to identify and detect positive and negative trends. Recognize safety performance excellence, and transparently address situations where performance fails to meet expectation. Champion good practice sharing and leverage new ideas from outside the function / outside the company. Work collaboratively with broader EHS team and South America to drive consistency, best practice sharing, and other people and performance improvement objectives. Ensure that the safety team meet its commitments, including key performance metrics and budgets. Make use of continuous improvement tools (i.e. 6-sigma, lean, data mining, etc.) and ensure that deliverables and activities are effectively embedded into the routine tasks of operating personnel.
  • Build a strong organization by developing people and attracting top talent to the team. Provide work direction to the team as well as timely and constructive feedback to ensure employees have a clear understanding of their work, roles, business goals and performance standards. Manage performance issues when necessary. Develop and coach employees to retain and grow talent. Support employees in career development at Mosaic. Assesses individual and organization needs and develops plans to address those needs. Cascade this philosophy through the organization. Work with HR and other stakeholders to remove barriers that impede progress towards this objective.
  • Support Mosaic’s global EH&S aspirations as an active member of and contributor to the EH&S Leadership team. Take on special projects as required by the team or assigned by senior leadership. Drive development and implementation of health and safety business unit objectives and targets aligned to the long term EHS strategic goals.
  • Represent Mosaic with various boards, commissions, associations, and community groups to maintain and develop professional relations and promote community good will.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Public Health or other related field. Engineering degree preferred.
  • 15+ years progressive professional experience in safety with minimum of 10 of years of safety leadership experience.
  • Technical understanding of chemical processing and/or mining operations and beneficiation.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing EH&S management systems, processes and tools across a large number of facilities.
  • Insightful about behavior-based safety; grasps concepts and implications of emerging trends
  • Strong safety technical skills, coupled with equally strong people leadership skills.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) Professional Engineer, or other relevant certification is a plus.
