Director, Environmental Health and Safety
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director, Environmental Health and Safety's primary responsibility is to manage and lead a comprehensive environmental, health and safety program to meet or exceed all NJDEP, NJDOH, PEOSH, EPA, OSHA and Department of Labor requirements for all facilities, staff and contractors. This hands-on leader will develop and mentor a team that works closely with operations, engineering, contractors and vendors to make a best-in-class utility for environmental, health and safety policies.
This internally and externally visible opportunity requires strong leadership and communication skills. The Director will be the main point of contact for multiple state and federal agencies, and they'll coordinate with the Joint Insurance Fund to meet all requirements for inspections and reporting. They'll work closely with other departments to coordinate and lead drills, and to gather data needed for their reporting. They'll work closely with the Executive Director and other departments to prepare for upcoming projects, including the significant amount of construction will be starting with lead service line replacements in the distribution system and eliminating open-water reservoirs for supply . The Director and their team will spend a significant amount of their time preparing reports; creating, compiling and tracking data in spreadsheets; supporting development of more sophisticated databases as warranted; and proactively developing new policies for Executive Director approval.
The client operates facilities that fall under the NJ Toxic Catastrophe Prevention Act (TCPA) Program. Experience with the reporting requirements and regulations of this program, or similar programs, is necessary. In addition, experience with OSHA safety standards under 29 CFR 1910 (General standards) and 29 CFR 1926 (Construction) and reporting is necessary due to 24/7 operations as well as an $809M capital program that is just being initiated. A master's degree in occupational safety, health or other related scientific fields is a plus.
This is an initial contract assignment that could lead to full time employment based on excellent work performance, professionalism, and interpersonal skills. The position is considered exempt and not subject to overtime pay due to it being a highly compensated title. The selected candidate will be subject to quarterly performance reviews (self-assessment and supervisor assessment) based on the attached tasks and standards for competence as well as conduct measured against the nine (9) core values (also attached): Safety, Excellence, Teamwork, Respect, Commitment, Integrity, Accountability, Intelligence and Diversity.
