Benefits Specialist

A vacancy exists for a Benefits Specialist to work at the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit in the Office of Human Resources. The Benefits Specialist will assist the Benefits & Wellness Manager in the administration of employee benefits, leave programs, and workers' compensation. This role is essential for ensuring that all staff members are well-informed about their benefits and leave options, and that they receive timely and accurate support. The Specialist will provide support with the day-to-day operations, process benefits billing, perform data entry and reconciliation, respond to employee inquiries, and maintain compliance with all relevant regulations.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree in a related field required. Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • 1-3 years of professional human resources experience required. Prior experience in an educational or nonprofit setting strongly preferred.
  • Expertise (includes one or more of the following):
    • Professional approach to their work that includes very strong customer service skills.
    • Strong technology skills, including extensive use of Microsoft Office, Google, and HRIS systems
    • Specialized skills in area to be able to work autonomously as proven through work experience.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of human resources
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations relating to human resources
  • Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and to work effectively with people.
  • Ability to multitask and handle frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators and staff.
  • Ability to schedule time to meet deadlines, to communicate effectively, and to read and analyze written and verbal information.
  • Ability to work independently and make work-related decisions and exercise good judgement in prioritizing tasks.
  • Ability to possess high standards of ethics and confidentiality.
  • Original certificates of clearance from the State Police, Child Abuse Registry, and PDE FBI
Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in the administration of all benefits programs, including but not limited to health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance plans. Help coordinate the annual open enrollment process, including communication and education efforts. Process benefits enrollments, changes, and terminations in the online benefits enrollment system and other HR systems. Assist with the processing of benefits billing, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. Perform data entry and reconciliation for benefits-related transactions.
  • Conduct benefits orientations for new hires and assist with the onboarding process. Meet with new hires and current employees to explain benefits options and leave policies. Provide ongoing support and education to employees regarding their benefits and leave options.
  • Assist in the administration of various leave programs, including FMLA, ADA, personal leave, sick leave, and vacation leave. Track and monitor leave usage and ensure accurate recording in the HRIS. Serve as a point of contact for employees regarding leave policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the administration of the workers' compensation program. Coordinate with employees, supervisors, and insurance carriers regarding workers' compensation claims. Ensure accurate and timely reporting and documentation of workplace injuries and claims. Provide support to employees navigating the workers' compensation process.
  • Respond to employee inquiries regarding benefits, leave, and workers' compensation. Provide guidance and support to employees navigating benefits and leave issues and assist in resolving any issues or discrepancies related to benefits, leave, or workers' compensation.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee records related to benefits, leave, and workers' compensation. Prepare and distribute required notices and communications to employees. Assist with audits and reporting requirements for benefits, leave, and workers' compensation programs. Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Assist in the creation and dissemination of benefits, leave, and workers' compensation forms and communications. Updating HR SharePoint site and websites as needed.
  • Assist with processing and tracking various benefits forms including but not limited to Comp/OT, tuition reimbursement, dues/licensure reimbursement, leave request forms, health waiver forms, and other HR/benefits related forms, ensuring information is accurately communicated to Payroll for processing and updated in HRIS systems.
  • Participate in benefits and wellness fairs, employee meetings, and other events as needed.
  • Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of Office of Human Resources and services performed.
  • Project a positive image and actively model the Mission, Values, and Operating Principles of the MCIU.
  • Serve as a back-up and support to other HR staff members.
  • Assists in preparing ad hoc data reports to the Director and/or Assistant Director.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned by the Director/Assistant Director of Human Resources.

The Montgomery County Intermediate Unit is located at 2 W. Lafayette St. Norristown, PA 19401.

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday, 7 hours/day, 12 months (260-262 days/year).

Salary

$27.41/hour - $32.25/hour
