Associate Director, Data Engineering

The Associate Director, Data Engineering position in the Office of the CTO is lead-level role with responsibility for creating and maintaining an enterprise-wide strategy which brings harmony to the data environment and taps into unrealized business value through readily available insights. Activities include performing analysis, architectural design, and implementation of various technology platforms with an emphasis on data structure design and management, under the general oversight of the SVP of Software Engineering and the Chief Technology Officer.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze BI needs, recommend BI solutions and strategy, design and implement an enterprise BI platform.
  • Map out enterprise data systems/objects and define/design required ETL systems/processes.
  • Document and maintain architectural design, technical configuration and mapping.
  • Document and maintain best practices, standards, and processes for managing the BI/DW systems and services.
  • Recommend on-going improvements to business and technology processes related to BI needs and solutioning.
  • Lead, provide technical guidance, and serve as a mentor to other team members.
  • Participate in technology leadership meetings to provide feedback and recommendations to the other leaders


REQUIREMENTS & COMPETENCIES:

Required Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years in managerial positions
  • Minimum total of 15 years in information technology
  • Minimum 10 years hands-on experience in data system design, development, and implementation
  • Minimum of 10 years team lead experience ideally in an Agile development environment.
  • Minimum of 5 years leading a SQL DBA team.
  • Strategic mindset and ability to deliver and execute on strategic objectives.

Project Delivery Competence

  • Strong ability to design and deliver enterprise data warehouse and business intelligence platforms, in conjunction with other software applications and platforms.
  • Ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical individuals to solve complex business problems.
  • Ability to understand needs within the context of a specific organization and identify appropriate technology solutions to maximize ROI with the solutions that are implemented.

Technology Skills & Experience

  • In-depth understanding of a wide range of database systems and architecture practices
  • In-depth experience with designing, administering, and maintaining Microsoft SQL Server and Databases
  • Experience with architecting star, snowflake galaxy schemas for data modeling
  • Experience in analysis and use of BI platforms based on the data topography and needs of an organization.
  • Experience with a major ETL tool, preferably Azure Data Factory
  • Experience with OLAP model and OLTP database models
  • Experience with Azure Lakehouse Architecture
  • Experience with Azure Data Bricks/Azure Synapse / Azure Analysis Services / (DW)/ADLS preferred.
  • Experience with self-service BI tools, preferably PowerBI and DOMO.
  • Experience with cloud and hybrid data topographies.
  • Experience working with various third-party data sources (MS Dynamics AX, HR/ERP systems, Salesforce, etc.) and connections to these through APIs as well as direct-to-DB and flat files.
  • Experience maintaining data quality and integrity in a complex and ever-changing data environment.
  • Experience maintaining source code in Git and managing a CI/CD pipeline, preferably with Azure DevOps
  • Firm understanding of web applications and/or other distributed application architectures.
  • Exposure to unstructured/semi-structured data systems (NoSQL) is preferred.

  • Ability to multi-task with good decision-making, analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to learn the intricacies of a new industry and move through new topics at a rapid pace.
  • Excellent oral, written, presentation and interpersonal communications skills; Ability to effectively exercise tact, discretion, judgment, and diplomacy when interacting and/or negotiating with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to present and explain technical information in a way that establishes rapport, persuades others, and gains understanding.
  • Ability and willingness to accept responsibility, willingness to challenge established practices and draw relevant conclusions, including the persistence and willingness to take calculated risk, to stimulate, market and sell new ideas within the organization.

Education

  • BS in a technical discipline ore equivalent work experience
  • Master’s degree (preferably in Computer Science, MIS, or a related field) OR equivalent work experience required

Salary Range

The salary range for this role reflects the range of factors that inform case-by-case compensation decisions including education, experience, training, licensure, certification, and geography as well as the business and organizational needs specific to the role. Compensation ranges may be broad, reflecting flexibility within the budget and title to consider candidates of varied experience. A reasonable estimate of the current compensation range for this role is $140,000 to $185,000. Select roles are additionally eligible for Incentive Compensation in the form of our Annual Performance Bonus Program.
