Assistant Professor of English

Position Summary

The School of Arts and Sciences invites applicants for an Assistant Professor of English - Composition/Writing to begin in either August 2024 or January 2025. This full-time, tenure track appointment requires a 12-credit per semester teaching load.

Founded in 1913 by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Mount Mary University provides an environment for the development of the whole person. This position includes primarily teaching first-year writing courses in composition and would work closely with Dr. Jennifer Kontny, Director of First-Year Composition. We also appreciate interest and experience in writing program administration. Opportunities to teach in secondary areas are available. Desirable secondary specialties include creative writing, journalism, or new media and professional writing (e.g., writing for websites, blogs and social media, digital storytelling, technical writing, grant writing).

Our first-year composition program values flexible, highly engaged teachers who are responsive to the needs of our students, the writing program, and our university-wide core learning outcomes. Evidence of success working with first-year students is required. Preference is given to candidates with experience working directly with students from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Teaching experience and a terminal degree in hand (Ph.D. or MFA) in English, Rhetoric, or a related field is preferred. Master's degree may be considered with significant teaching experience with a diverse student population.

• Active service to the composition program, department, University, and community.
• Engage in scholarly activities that support and advance the profession, including publication and/or presentation.

• Outstanding verbal, writing, and presentation skills; must be able to communicate and interact effectively with Mount Mary students, employees, and alumnae.
