Job Duties
The Virginia Office of the Attorney General is seeking an attorney. We offer the challenge and opportunity of public service, a professional environment, and competitive salaries and benefits. The attorney will provide representation and a wide variety of legal services to various education agencies reporting to the Secretary of Education.
It is anticipated that the attorney will handle a broad range of legal matters for various education agencies and boards. Together with other Section attorneys, this position will provide legal services to the Virginia Department of Education, and one or more of the following: the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, New College Institute, Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, Southern Virginia Higher Education Center, Frontier Culture Museum, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Science Museum of Virginia, Natural History Museum, and Gunston Hall. Serving as agency counsel requires advising decision-makers throughout the organization on the legal risks and obligations associated with their duties.
Counsel may also represent the agencies/institutions before regulatory bodies and to third parties in pre-litigation and transactional matters. Additionally, this individual will provide other legal services to the Commonwealth as directed the Office of the Attorney General. Some travel may be required.
Minimum Qualifications
Furthermore, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to a broader legal initiatives across the Commonwealth as directed by the Office of the Attorney General.

Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
- Admission to the Virginia State Bar or eligibility for admission by reciprocity
- A minimum of two years’ experience in the general practice of law preferably in a government, public interest, or litigation focused environment
- Proficient in legal research, writing, and analytical skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to manage many projects/cases simultaneously and work under pressure
