The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for multiple Adult Probation Officer 1/2 positions located at the Goose Creek Correctional Center (GCCC) in Mackenzie Point, Alaska. 


What you will be doing:

Goose Creek Correctional Center is recruiting for an Adult Probation Officer 1/2. Adult Probation Officers are responsible for the supervision of a caseload of adult felony and misdemeanor offenders that have been remanded to the custody and care of the Department of Corrections. If you have the desire to assist your community, the State, and the Department by facilitating secure confinement, rehabilitation, and offender management with an eye toward inmate's successful community reentry, this is great opportunity for you. The successful candidate will work alongside a team of other Adult Probation Officer 1/2 and 3 to handle the overall caseload management, rehabilitative, and reentry needs of 1300 to 1500 inmates.

The working environment you can expect:

Work is performed in 24-hour facilities. Probation Officers typically work a regular 37.5 hours a week, 5 days a week. Probation Officers at Goose Creek Correctional Center are given their own office instead of a workstation. Our cohesive team supports a positive work environment and encourages input from all team members.


Goose Creek Correctional Center is located on Point Mackenzie off Alsop Road. The daily commute allows you to enjoy Alaska's beautiful scenery and wildlife. Take in the sweeping views of Sleeping Lady on your way to work and the breathtaking panorama of Pioneer Peak and the Chugach mountains on your way home.The surrounding environment offers a plethora of opportunities for the avid outdoorsman. Point Mackenzie is stocked with legal moose and black bear for the avid hunter. In addition, the Mat-Su Valley boasts exceptional recreational prospects yet offers close access to modern conveniences.


Who we are looking for:

We are looking for someone with excellent and effective communication skills, strong organizational skills, a positive outlook and demeanor, experience with multiple computer programs, and the ability to remain calm in a multitude of situations. We seek to find someone who has a strong work ethic, has problem solving and multi-tasking skills, and the ability to exercise independent judgement while also ensuring contribution to a team. 


Requires daily contact with GCCC employees and inmates. Requires an ability to remain aware of surroundings in a prison environment at all times.

Minimum Qualifications

Adult Probation Officer 1

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in any field.

Or substitution:

Four years of paraprofessional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, social services, corrections, criminal investigation, public safety or law enforcement. 

Or substitution:

Four years in any combination of postsecondary education from an accredited college and paraprofessional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, social services, corrections, criminal investigation, public safety or law enforcement (2.67 semester hours or 4 quarter hours of post-secondary education are equal to one month of experience).  


All Adult Probation Officer 1 positions are flexibly staffed. Advancement to the Adult Probation Officer 2 level occurs only when the incumbent successfully completes all training, including the specified terms of the APSC training and certification requirements, and is certified by the supervisor as prepared to perform at the next level. Advancement to the Adult Probation Officer 2B level is contingent upon completion of the Department’s Probation Officer Academy and the Probation Officer Field Training Manual. 


Adult Probation Officer 2

Successful completion of training under a formally established Adult Probation Officer 1-2 (A or B) flexible staffing training plan with the State of Alaska.

OR 

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in any field. 

And 

One year of professional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, social services, criminal investigation, public safety or law enforcement, or as a social services case manager or counselor. 

 

Or substitution: 

Five years in any combination of postsecondary education from an accredited college and paraprofessional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, public safety, law enforcement or corrections. (2.67 semester hours or 4 quarter hours of postsecondary education are equal to one month of experience).
