POSITION: District Secondary Science/Social Studies Specialist

Terms of Employment: 10 Month Employee - temporary if hired after contractual start date for teachers

Salary: Current Teacher Salary Schedule

LOCATION: District Office supporting Capital Schools

GOAL: Support the needs of students in Capital Schools to implement NGSS Science and Social Studies Standards and Practices to support overall instruction.

PRIMARY DUTIES And RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Using the Delaware WIMS system or applicable format order Science kits for K-8 and manage work orders
  • Monitor any existing pilots for curricular materials and work closely with teachers on these pilots
  • Support coordination of professional development, professional learning communities, lesson planning, and professional learning opportunities of science and social studies staff
  • Manage and update K-12 Schoology site for Science and place curriculum guides, pacing guides, assessments, documents for science and social studies curriculum, NGSS background documents and other pertinent science and social studies materials
  • Participate and/or facilitate Science and Social Studies PLCs across secondary grade levels
  • Support the preparation of 3-Dimensional Assessments, rubrics, and lesson plans used in the science classrooms
  • Model effective social studies instruction focused on civic responsibility for teachers and leaders
  • Support the selection, piloting, and implementation of core social studies materials, 6-12 to support instruction
  • Utilize data to identify strengths and areas of need of student learning in science and social studies
  • Promote the use of literacy in science and social studies content
  • Provide social studies instructional support for cross-curricular programs and projects
  • Communicate out and participate in training dates for updates to curriculum programs and resources. Maintain records for those teachers that are trained in their various curriculum levels.
  • Prepare document and submit stipends working with curriculum and payroll staff at district office for Science leads in grades K-8 for district
  • Regular communication with lead science teachers to help guide them with work at their schools
  • Monitor planetarium maintenance and prepare shows in planetarium for the district
  • Support state assessment schedules for secondary schools
  • Support processes around state reporting for house bills (example HB 198 and
  • Travel to schools within the district to help teachers with science or social studies instruction and materials used in lessons.
  • Prepare professional development with district coaches and work on committees for common PD for staff
  • Work closely with DOE to share science opportunities including STEM workshops, Go Green applications, nominating teachers for Presidential Awards, and any other state opportunities available for various grade levels.
  • Collaborate with our district copy center to print manuals for upcoming science units and have them shipped to respective schools. This also includes replacement manuals for new teachers. Post electronic versions of all of these units on Schoology.
  • Participate in walk through across buildings in the district to support science learning
  • Monitor science safety and share safety contracts and provide safety training to all science staff
  • Conduct and/or attend assigned after school meetings
  • Participate in ongoing training in the area of Science
  • Coordinate safety and program compliance of laboratory-based programs; safety supply purchases-including OSHA and other program required items
  • Provide school-based support for teachers and teams of teachers to implement standards-based instruction to meet the needs of all learners to include students with disabilities, English Learners and students who are identified as gifted learners.
  • Coordinate program support and assessments to the design and implementation of supports for all students including those with disabilities, English Learners, and gifted learners served in the science classrooms.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum, instruction and assessments, data analysis and input, and engage in ongoing curriculum development, revision and alignment.
  • Use and demonstrate technology tools and applications effectively. Use and demonstrate instructional technology tools and processes effectively.
  • Provide programmatic support as needed to identified department meetings during school hours and after school.
  • Participate in statewide professional development projects as assigned.
  • Support Department Chair/Instructional Leaders PK-12 with the on-going shift to fully implement standards-based programs.
  • Any other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree with certification in middle or secondary science
  • Master's degree preferred from an accredited college/university
  • Minimum of 5 years of excellent teaching experience in early middle or secondary science classrooms

Optional Qualifications:

  • Certification in Secondary Social Studies Content
  • Experience in Social Studies teaching middle or high school
