Don't get stressed out when you see a job posting with 100+ applicants. If you feel like you fit the job description, go for it. I got 90+ applications for one role the other night. Not a single one of them was a fit. Some were close, but the majority were clearly just a shot in the dark from someone hitting the easy apply button. The reality for most job postings is that less than 10% of applicants are qualified, and this number seems to be trending downward. (This is a topic for another discussion.) If you think you're a fit for the role, ignore the number of applicants and give it a go! The answer will always be ‘no’ unless you try.

Here’s how it should be categorized: -> 0 years: This is the real entry-level, perfect for fresh graduates or those just starting out. - >1-3 years: You’re looking for Associates. - >3-5 years: This is where Managers fit in. - >5-7 years: These are your Senior Managers. - >8-10 years: Now we’re talking about Directors. - >10+ years: These are your VPs. Job seekers, here's a tip of the day: Don't assume a job is or can be fully remote when you apply unless it is explicitly stated in the job posting. Many applicants end up disappointed when the role turns out not to be remote. For instance, if a job posting mentions a specific location like Philadelphia, it likely prefers candidates within a commutable distance to that office. Moreover, it's common for people to inquire about changing a job to fully remote. However, unless clearly mentioned, assume the position is either in-office or hybrid. While some roles offer remote work, it should be clearly outlined in the job description. Negotiating remote work is possible but shouldn't be assumed. If a candidate goes through 3+ rounds of interviews with your company and you decide not to move forward with them, you owe them feedback. Period. Ghosting candidates after they put in hours of their time is not only disrespectful but reflect poorly on your brand. Sending a quick note with an update on their candidacy is the least you can do. 9 red flags you must never ignore during interviews. (And how to respond when you see them) ❌ “We’re a family here” ↳ Work is not family. Your family won’t lay you off for profit. ↳ It's more like a team and it should function that way. ❌ The interview process has more than 6 stages ↳ It's a sign of a broken recruiting system ↳ If they can't decide within 4 stages, it's likely not a fit. ❌They promise higher salary "later" but don't put it in writing. ↳ If it's not in writing, it probably will never happen. ↳ Make sure every promise is documented and signed. ❌ Defensive responses to legitimate questions ↳ If you interviewer gets easily offended, that shoul concern you. ↳ Your career affects your entire life. Ask questions. ❌ Weird power dynamics on display ↳ Nobody should intentionally try to throw you off or intimidate you. ↳ If they do, you will also likely deal with a lot of office politics. ❌ The bait and switch offer or salary ↳ If they change the salary or title after the interviews, be skeptical. ↳ These are early signs of manipulation. ❌ Your interviewer is disengaged or distracted ↳ If the hiring manager keeps checking their phone, you are not their priority. ↳ You deserve the full attention of your interviewer. ❌ Exploding Offers ↳ Companies that pressure you into signing an offer quickly are often hiding something. ↳ Trust your insticts and go through your offer with extra precaution. ❌ They ask for free work ↳ Exploitation often starts in the interview process. ↳ You should be compensated for projects that take more than an hour to complete. It is likely they are reading through all the applicants resumes who clicked easy apply. Then reading all the ones who answered the screening questions wrong to make sure no one was missed. As I posted yesterday about people applying to roles that 1-2 levels below them screening them cannot be as simple as key word match and years, especially when it is a Director Level position. Example: Can a CTO step down and be a Director of Infrastructure, yes, it is likely. But will the CTO of a small startup with 5year have the same experience as someone who started as maybe Reliability Engineer or Infrastructure Engineer? The individual who progressed through the ranks and is now the Director of Infrastructure will have a stronger foundation and know the processes better. From the beginning of your freelance journey, focus on building a portfolio demonstrating your expertise in specific areas, whether healthcare, medical content, or the cosmetics industry. When potential clients see that you’re knowledgeable, they’ll value your technical background more—and they’ll pay for it. 2. Communicate in a Way That Translates Science One key to securing better-paying clients is how well you can simplify complex scientific concepts. Clients value a science writer who can break down technical jargon into engaging, digestible content that resonates with both specialists and non-specialists. Work on this skill to stand out in your pitches. 3. Build Long-Term Relationships, Not Just One-Off Projects The best clients are those who return, and for that to happen, they need to see the value you bring. Go beyond just writing—offer insights, provide suggestions, and be proactive in communicating how your content can help their business. Over time, these efforts lead to long-term contracts and higher-paying work. 4. Start with a Growth Mindset When I began, I used a mix of outbound marketing (cold emails, DMs) and inbound marketing (LinkedIn posts, referrals). It’s all about testing what works best. Dear hiring managers, Please stop advertising roles that require 2-5 years of experience as “Entry-Level”. There is nothing ENTRY about it. Let’s clear this up real quick. - 0-1 years: This is the true entry-level. - 2-5 years: Now we are looking at associates. - 5-10 years: Here we are at mid-level. Far away from entry. Entry-level roles were created to give people with little to no industry experience a chance to get their foot in the door. Not an opportunity to pay experienced employees minimum wage. Let's make our job adverts reflect that.

Applying to more jobs will raise your chances at interviews. But mass applying to jobs that don't match your skillset will just waste your time and energy. As an example, I have recently posted a "Director of Data & Analytics" role to which I received applications from Business Analysts with two years of experience or Data Engineers with no managing experience at all. We all have aspirations to grow our careers, but you have to make sure you are taking the right steps. Understand what the right next step is for you, considering your career history and your end-goals Then apply to related roles. Applying to every role you come across might not raise your chances at an interview, but targeting your search and applications will. #apply #data #ai

When you as a hiring manager take 3 weeks to schedule an interview, it makes not just you, but your COMPANY look bad. Recruiters get the candidate super excited about you and your opportunity. And now, they don't want to continue the process. And they accepted another offer because the other company showed active interest in them. As recruiters, there's only so much we can do and say after 3 WEEKS. Let's standardizing making quick decisions, scheduling interviews quicker (it really doesn't take that long), and COMMUNICATING instead of going silent. #hiring #software #SaaS

On Labor Day I think about those laboring without a choice. The ones stuck in entry level jobs getting paid under the poverty threshold because they don’t have the ability or opportunity to gain the necessary skills or education to better their situation. I think about how labor negotiations rarely take these individuals into account because the people at the top think it’s more fair for everyone to get raises than to get those at the bottom one that would improve their lives. I recognize that the bulk majority of those I am referencing come from marginalized communities continuing a perpetually archaic societal structure based on oppression and supression. We need more leaders willing to stand up for those locked up in the basement and to give them the tools to rise up. Be that leader.
