Global advertising is projected to reach $1 trillion in 2024. Yet, less than 10% of that comes from government communications. In other words, if you're in government communications, you're outspent by basically every other category. In this Darwinian ecosystem of messages, you’re irrelevant unless your content is the fittest to survive and thrive - the strongest, most creative. You simply won’t survive the attention battles with predictable, box-ticking creative. You need to make an effort. Being creative isn't just a nice-to-have; it's a necessity. Anything less wastes resources—whether public funds, taxpayer money, or people's time. Here are a couple of key insights I’ve found on government comms spending: • The US federal government typically spends $1 billion annually. • In 2023/24, the United Kingdom government spent around 749 million British pounds on communication. I’m far from being great with numbers, so I’ll keep it simple: If we assume the US spend is representative of the bigger 20 global economies, global government ad spending could total $20 billion annually, or roughly 2% of total ad spend. Factoring in smaller nations, maybe that figure goes up to 4-5%? Seems like a small piece of the pie, considering how important government communications are... They’re the invisible glue that makes life in an organized society, possible. Government communications shape public perception, inform citizens, and drives engagement and behavior change—all while competing with all sorts of messages from chocolate bars, airlines, soft drinks, car manufacturers, digital platforms, haircare brands… you name it. So, it's no small task for government comms and marketing teams. Perhaps that's why these are some of the most interesting briefs out there. Creativity isn’t a luxury—it’s a responsibility.
