From the "The One Constant is Change" Dept: People may be affected by the availability heuristic (see: https://lnkd.in/gprmHciV ) from the mass media's focus on higher education cutbacks in programs and closing of some colleges. However, the Chronicle of Higher Education (CHE) analysis of bachelor's programs, primarily at 2 year and 4 year program (I am puzzled by the City University of New York Graduate Center which not only has a bachelor's program[s] but it grew from one [1] in 2002 to 181 programs in 2022), shows a contrary situation. Quoting the HCE article: ***A Chronicle analysis of federal data from more than 2,000 four-year public, private, and for-profit colleges shows no evidence of a significant decline in bachelor’s-degree programs or completions over a 20-year period. In fact, it’s quite the opposite: Between 2002 and 2022, higher-education institutions expanded their number of programs by nearly 23,000, or 40 percent — a period during which undergraduate enrollment grew 8 percent. As enrollment levels off, the growth trajectory of programs may shift, which will become clear as new data become available.*** Some quick points: (1) Bachelor degrees awarded in Business, Engineering, and the Health Professions have had significant growth from 2002 to 2020. (2) Perennial favorite areas Computer Science and Psychology also grew but the CS rate was three times (3x) that of Psychology. (3) Traditional/Foundational areas English and History both had the number of Bachelor degrees drop after the 2008 recession with no/little subsequent improvement. (4) Biology has sub-areas that show significant growth. Quoting the HCE article: ***In biology, six programs saw the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded at least double between 2003 and 2022. One of them, neurobiology and neurosciences — which didn’t exist in federal data until 2010 — went from about 2,800 degrees awarded to more than 10,000.***
