Our report on AI adoption in higher education marketing and enrollment management is now available! Thanks to UPCEA, and particularly Bruce Etter and Emily West, for collaborating with Katie Tomlinson, Nancy Kim and me on this report. There is a huge gap between perceived value and actual use of AI among the higher education marketing experts that we surveyed. The reasons given varied from budget constraints to quality concerns. But, I think it goes much deeper than the reasons given. I see two primary challenges that are holding back the adoption of AI - skills training and a lack of understanding into HOW to leverage AI tools effectively and efficiently. Fortunately, both can be fixed and neither are unique to higher education or the professionals we surveyed. If you are a marketing professional at any level today, it is critical that you gain a full understanding of how AI can and is impacting your work. Then, develop the skills and expertise necessary to leverage these tools to improve your own work. If you are a marketing leader, invest in your staff's development, hire curious team members that are open to exploring, and make time for your team to learn, integrate and iterate. Fostering democracy? Not exactly the mission I had in mind getting into higher ed tech. But when I joined The Chronicle of Higher Education's webinar on First-Year Student Success last week, I was amazed to see so many attendees asking about strategies for getting out the vote this fall with first-year students. Since November is less than 5 months away, here are 5 ideas that anyone can use to get out the vote with Mongoose's Cadence (or whichever messaging tool you have): 1. 🎂 DOB < 11/6/06 (Now) - Remind them they can vote this year with a link to details, whether or not they're enrolled with you yet! 2. Absentee Info Poll❓(Sep) - Find students to follow up with information on requesting absentee ballots from home with a quick "Yes/No" Smart Message 3. ^Send the Nos an ⚡️auto-reply with more details on getting registered to vote/voting locally! 4. 🏅Challenge Stats (Nov) - Send out a blast text the morning of Election Day to let everyone where to go to get their "I voted" pin to help set a new campus record. 5. It's Not Too Late! (Nov) - ⏰ Schedule a text to go out on election day in the late afternoon reminding them that polls are still open! 6. BONUS - Stuck on the message? 🪄Ask your AI Assistant to add some ✨ splash to make it stick out to your students. This is great. There are so many possibilities with this work. Why not use Ai to help teachers and students dismantle long held inequities that plague the educational system? As we think about teacher shortages in STEM fields, Ai can help fill the gaps coupled with thoughtful and purpose driven contextual PCBL instruction.

The Panel Discussion on the topic "The Intersection of AI and Education: Going Beyond the Hype" at 1EdTech Consortium's Learning Impact Conference 2024 was a great discussion with lots of questions from the audience. For me the biggest takeaway was about a potential equity crisis in the next several years. Ryan Lufkin of Instructure described a split in the education community on AI with those incorporating AI into education on one side and those seeking to ban or exclude it on the other side. However, it won't be long before colleges/universities and potential employers expect every candidate to have experience using AI in some capacity - opening up a severe gap for those students who came from educational systems that chose to exclude it from the curriculum. #LearningImpact24
