How can you adopt the best executive coaching and mentoring models?
I utilize the 70-20-10 model with my younger clients. As an ambitious newcomer to the workforce, there are relevant social and professional norms that can diminish enthusiasm for the youngster. I utilize the 70-20-10 model to bring attention to these potential barriers to identify gaps and prepare growth plans to contend with the totality of the workplace environment. Success in the workplace is different from success in the classroom. Individual brilliance and hard work are not enough for a growth trajectory in the workplace. It can also serve as a barrier to success if leaders have a limited view of successful attributes.

How can you adopt the best executive coaching and mentoring models?
Workplace mentoring offers numerous benefits, including knowledge transfer, skill development, increased employee engagement, career advancement, and a positive organizational culture. Mentoring fosters learning builds relationships, and empowers individuals to reach their potential, ultimately contributing to personal and professional growth. The most critical aspect of mentoring is the ability to listen for both the mentor and the mentee. That is why I prefer to utilize something other than the CIGAR method with my clients and instead use the CLEAR model: Contracting, Listening, Exploring, Action, and Review. Similar to the CIGAR in many ways, the listening aspect is so critical to the success of any mentoring relationship.

How can you adopt the best executive coaching and mentoring models?
I coach my clients to utilize the STAR method in interview settings. Rather that is promotional opportunities or business proposals. The exercises required to implement STAR have proven to be a revelation and unpacking of personal and professional endurance and achievement. I instruct my clients to write 15 minutes weekly in a journal about their week's experience. The culmination of journal entries is a great start in being authentic and personalizing STAR for the given situation.

How can you adopt the best executive coaching and mentoring models?
As a coach, I help my clients utilize the GROW model as a fundamental leadership tool that should and can be implemented in day-to-day operations to keep teams on track, identify and remove barriers to success and resolve most issues. Deeper, more systematic, and long-term improvements require a more robust model.

The energy utility companies have served as the face of resistance to fair employment for African Americans despite the liberal popularity of diversity management programs. This research is a case study of efficacy of Title VII’s impact on African American employees employed in the energy utility industry in the state of California. The case study relies on 201 employment discrimination complaints filed between 2014–2020 with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing against the four investment-owned utilities in California. The case study indicated that the majority of employment race-discrimination complaints are filed by African American employees. The aggregate reasons for complaints are consistent across all utility companies, with high rates of African American employees experiencing harassment, retaliation, and a lack of internal mobility. The analysis of the complaints revealed a lack of procedural accountability in (a) promoting, (b) employee evaluations, (c) harassment, and (d) expulsion across all utility companies. Furthermore, the inconsequential procedures designed to curve harassment and retaliation carelessly promote an acceptable culture of inequity. Each utility company’s diversity management programs dilute the focus of African American inequities in lieu of other despairing groups who are largely made up of the same salient racial and gender in-group. Moreover, utility companies are misrepresenting the success of diversity programs with a statistical aggregate that purposely misleads and often hides the inequity and lack of commitment towards African American employees. The author contends that the progress of diversity, equity, and inclusion for African American employees in energy utility companies in the most liberal and diverse states remains subjected to continuous social closure and statistical discrimination, resulting in inequitable hiring, mobility, harassment, and expulsion of the African American workforce.
