This report is not as interesting as the headline would suggest. The survey suggests journalists are suffering from the same work life balance issues everyone else is: the desire to work from home, the inability to turn off on vacation, the need to work outside normal business hours. I think journalists have to deal with some unique challenges that aren't addressed in these queries: the challenge of staying objective in a post-truth society where everything is PR driven, the expectation that they will offer all perspectives and all nuances in areas where they are not expert, and the physical threats that come with the job in the current political environment. When people have asked me what my book is about, I have struggled to answer. That's because the project started more than 12 years ago in a series of eulogies I delivered over the course of a single, very difficult summer. I recently got the chance to write about the connection between the eulogy as a form of nonfiction and other writing that blends biography, journalism, and memoir. PFAS (so-called "forever chemicals") have been used in hundreds of different consumer and industrial products. Contaminated drinking water, food and consumer product exposure partly explains why PFAS are found in nearly everyone. From lawsuits to media coverage on independent studies & government surveys/inspections, companies across industries and across the globe are facing accusations around public health & environmental impacts of PFAS.
