A new crop of early-stage startups — along with some recent VC investments — illustrates a niche emerging in the autonomous vehicle technology sector. Unlike the companies bringing robotaxis to city streets, these startups are taking their tech off-road. Two recent entrants — Seattle-based Overland AI and New Brunswick-based Potential — are poised to get a first-mover advantage on this segment of autonomy.

Smart cameras are resurging and this time they are AI powered. Speaking from experience, when we were integrating our ReplayXD cameras with CAN data and early 5G soectrum for motorsports and other entertainment, I am pleased to see that AI is boosting smart cameras back into the spotlight. OpenAI's recent $60 million investment in Opal, a company known for its high-end webcams, is more than just a financial boost—it's a strategic move to revolutionize how we interact with cameras through AI. Opal, in collaboration with OpenAI, plans to integrate advanced AI models into their webcams, transforming them into powerful creative tools that go beyond traditional uses. The integration of AI in cameras presents significant opportunities, particularly in the realm of smart cameras for remote production. These AI-powered webcams can enhance workflows by automating tasks such as real-time image optimization, background removal, and even interactive features like gesture recognition. In remote production settings, smart cameras can automatically adjust framing, lighting, and focus, ensuring high-quality output without the need for manual intervention. This not only streamlines production but also makes high-end creative processes more accessible to a broader audience. Moreover, these smart cameras could play a crucial role in remote learning and virtual collaboration by analyzing user engagement and dynamically adjusting content delivery for optimal interaction. The potential applications are vast, from improving online education experiences to enabling more personalized and efficient creative workflows. What a surprise this morning!! Waking up to see Lucid Reality Labs included in Anshel Sag’s #AWE2024 Tech Review in #Forbes! What a privilege to host Anshel in our booth. For any that missed attending AWE 2024 USA in person, Anshel’s article provides an amazing re-cap and well worth a read! “One of the more impactful experiences I had at AWE 2024 was at the Lucid Reality Labs booth, where I tried out the company’s Lifeguard VR training application. The company built this app in partnership with the American Red Cross to deliver a suite of tools to help train hundreds of thousands of lifeguards annually. The idea is to expose lifeguards to scenarios that might not be easy to recreate or might not happen very frequently, but that are still important to be trained for, with drowning scenarios as a prime example. The American Red Cross wants to train 300,000 users per year using this new VR tool to help narrow the skill gaps among lifeguards and ensure the highest level of safety. If even one life is saved, it will have been worth it. I tried out the drowning simulator and it was extremely realistic, to the point where I felt some of the mental load faced by lifeguards who must always remain aware and watchful for people who might be drowning. While this app didn’t feature eye tracking, that seems like the natural next step in learning how users perform.”
