Today, Git is the go-to version control tool, but that wasn't always the case. Much like VHS over Betamax & Blu-ray over HD DVD, Git had to win its crown. GitHub was the killer app that made it take off, but not without the work of Scott Chacon, who taught an entire generation of devs (myself included) to use and love Git. Another thing I do is track my time, religiously. Every single bit of "work" time I spend is tracked by client (which is sometimes my own company), project, and task. This makes it easy for me to see what I was doing, when, who it was for, and how long it actually took. I can also generate reports to see how much time I spent on certain types of tasks, including mundane things like "Processing" (which includes email, Slack, etc.)

Continuing on with foundational C# Lessons that I'm working thru, here are my thoughts on the material. This collection of education material logically builds on the previous one. It covers starting at the download (and installation!) of Visual Studio Code (https://lnkd.in/eafnAsEW) - an IDE much like Microsoft's Visual Studio systems but it offers multiplatform related features. It also appears to offer a wide variety of programming language and plugin support. Like the previous education material, this collection assumes absolutely NO knowledge of the material covered beyond what was the last lesson talked about - which again is excellent. It does introduce IntelliSense (https://lnkd.in/eUVaHJ5p) - the auto complete feature from the full Visual Studio Community edition. I'm not sure if there's an actual difference between the one here in Studio Code and the one from the Community edition and IntelliSense here appeared to act a little different than what I was expecting. With that in mind, the educational lessons do a great job of highlight the auto complete role of IntelliSense and using it to see what some of the routines / methods are available to an object. Disclaimer: I'm used to Visual Studio 2022 Community edition, I imagine I may just have something incorrectly configured when I went thru the material, but the way IntelliSense is shown off is very graspable and this material shows just how useful it can be. Some C# highlight is that this introduces the concept of the .NET library, calling functions and declaring .NET objects. It also explains that objects are instances of defined classes. This series of lessons also introduces the idea of static/stateless methods vs stateful methods. The was the differences are explained is that some routines will act on an object's state to accomplish what it will do such as FileStream.Write()- a routine that writes data to a particular while - one sourced from the instance of FileStream it is acting one. Static routines do not act on any particular object's state to do what they need to do such as Console.Clear() - a routine that clears the Console window. One of the things I found useful in this material and likely will explore some more is getting familiar with Visual Studio Code's build flow. There is a PowerShell terminal that's built into the IDE located near the bottom - at lease for me. It's there one can type commands to both build or run the project - "dotnet build" or "dotnet run" depending on the need and the output gets placed into the Terminal window. One thing the material here does not cover is the use of a debugger - I do see that's coming in the future when I look ahead. Today I earned my "Call methods from the .NET Class Library using C#" badge! I’m so proud to be celebrating this achievement and hope this inspires you to start your own @MicrosoftLearn journey!
