Three tips to help you stay patient in the sportscasting job market _________________________________________________________ Every time STAA works with Learfield Sports to fill a play-by-play opening, I invariably hear from at least three people who are stunned that they didn’t get an interview. Some of that comes from entitlement or ego, but much of it is rooted in impatience. They're understandably eager to move forward. Here are three keys to help you stay patient in the sports broadcasting job market. 1. Stay busy helping yourself Smart activity equals energy, motivation and confidence. One example is to stay in contact with your acquaintances in the industry. Keep them updated on your career and ask what they are hearing about possible job opportunities. 2. Always be working on your craft Study your own work, listen to others and ask for critiques. 3. Hone your job market approach Sharpen your demo, refine your resume, study the art of writing cover letters and how to present those items to employers. I've been involved in a number of discussions regarding NIL. Most tend to focus on two questions: Who should handle things (Collectives, third parties, etc.) and the other is How. I am convinced that schools should focus on the necessary processes first before focusing on the who and the how. Here are some examples: Should the school pay the athletes directly, or should the Collective handle it: I think the first question should be how should athletes receive payments that is transparent and also offers athletes protections and some financial guardrails (not capping compensation, but making sure IP-related income standards from places like the music industry are followed: 1099 income, active vs. passive income, royalty payment tracking, etc.). The system has to be transparent, both to the student-athlete and the school. How should we handle our Collective: There won't be one correct answer here that fits every school. Successful P4 schools will have an "athlete marketing" arm that helps athletes that are interested and able to earn NIL revenue to facilitate that, either directly with the athlete or with the athlete's agent. That could be a Collective, a third-party MMR, a combination, or an internal group. But identifying the processes and how that program will be measured is more critical than answering who will handle it. Once the main processes, KPIs, etc., are identified, then it makes evaluation and decisions regarding who or how a bit easier to put together.

“Foster the best playing environments” Here is a question that was brought to my attention this week. Can an MLS Club protect up to 9 players in their region without informing the player? If that is the case: would that rule stand up in a court of law? If not the case: what is the “protect player rule” and why is the list not made public? Anyone with correct answers please respond! As a founder, it is imperative that you develop a compelling #vision for your company. Working on your vision like clay, consistency refining while keeping the main goal in sight. How many of them focus on cultivating the best athletes both on and off the field? It was just a matter of time. In the ever-changing landscape of sports business, I think most of us are not surprised by anything these days. No matter where you stand on the subject of NIL and the transfer portal, I think we can all agree we're living through one of the greatest shifts in the history of college sports. So yesterday's situation in Vegas, while certainly newsworthy, was simply the first of what will most likely be several scenarios that occur until the Wild West Era of NIL comes to an end. As we move forward in this new world, one area that cannot be stressed enough is the need for qualified, credible talent to stand up and help create a healthy, equitable college sports ecosystem that is sustainable. Now, some of these companies may not even exist yet. But some are out there and Advance Sports is here to help shine a light on them. Jake Rosenberg and The Athlete Group are doing everything they can to help solve some of the biggest issues in sports, including ensuring college players understand how to properly evaluate an agent and when to be vigilant about potential landmines that could arise when making important decisions about their futures.
