Darden Restaurants recently reported its quarterly results, showcasing resilience amidst a challenging environment. While Olive Garden faced a decline in same-store sales for the second consecutive quarter, Darden's overall performance remained steady, with earnings per share surpassing expectations at $2.65 and revenue reaching $2.96 billion. Looking forward to fiscal 2025, Darden projects a promising outlook with expected earnings per share between $9.40 and $9.60 and anticipated net sales of $11.8 billion to $11.9 billion. The company's LongHorn Steakhouse segment notably reported a 4% increase in same-store sales, underscoring Darden's effective management and operational strength. With plans to invest $550 million to $600 million in capital expenditures, Darden is poised to enhance its offerings and maintain its competitive edge in the market. The lack of exits from both private equity and venture capital funds over the last few years continues to have a significant impact on the behavior of large investors. Per the attached article from Institutional Investor, single family offices have moved more capital into fixed income and liquid equites (ie. the stock market). With yields on fixed income securities now higher, the move into that asset class is easy to understand. I would expect a larger allocation to fixed income to endure, as interest rates are likely to remain at or near their current level for the foreseeable future. However, I suspect that the move into liquid stocks is driven more by the need for near-term liquidity, rather than any structural change in asset allocation philosophy. The truth is that family offices need both access to growth companies AND liquidity. If exits in the private markets begin to uptick again, I would expect family offices to once again deploy capital to PE and VC. Private equity and venture capital continue to be the most effective method to access the return profile of growth-stage companies. That is not going to change. The largest publicly traded private equity (PE) firms have seen a substantial increase in fund inflows and adjustment to their areas of focus, particularly driven by private credit, according to our Q1 2024 US Public PE and GP Deal Roundup @Pitchbook, despite a challenging exit environment in 2024. I think Adams Street Partners are spot on in this very thoughtful piece! · Rising interest rates are creating headwinds for buyout portfolios · Leverage reliant GP's returns are to be negatively impacted · GPs focusing on scaling via earnings growth are more likely to outperform · Sellers should rein in their valuation expectations What does this mean for PE market like #ASEAN where returns are inherently #growthdriven? Rather simplistically put, higher interests rates are levelling the playing field between Developed Markets (DM) and Emerging Markets (EM) The more returns need to rely on growth, the more regions or countries with strong GDP growth fundamentals become attractive. Granted there are many more nuances that come into play, but one could hardly argue that for the last decade+, low rates and generous leverage packages have supercharged returns in DMs. Unlevered EM businesses needed to grow earnings 3 to 4x faster than DM peers to just match the returns, quite a tall order even in booming economies. The recent broadcast agreement between QVC and USA Pickleball raises an intriguing question: can #retail owned media platforms serve as viable destinations for nascent/emerging sports properties seeking a national audience and incremental revenue?   While the answer is likely “it depends”, I do think there are several interesting aspects to this particular partnership.   QVC’s commitment to blending shopping with sports coverage demonstrates how innovative retail companies can use live entertainment IP to keep priority audiences engaged. Across its various platforms, QVC produces more than 30 hours of live content each day. That provides ample opportunity to infuse partner content into its programming.   Notably, the collaboration also sees QVC become the exclusive retail industry partner of USA Pickleball. This enables cross-selling opportunities to active participants in the sport. QVC’s core demographic is individuals between the ages of 45 to 65, with much of its marketing efforts focused on people aged 50 and up. This aligns closely with the average age of active pickleball players, the majority of which were over 55 as of 2022.   For emerging sports properties like USA pickleball, non-traditional broadcasters like QVC provide significantly higher national reach than a fringe sports streaming platform. QVC’s media channels, including QVC+ and HSN+, are available in over 100 million households worldwide, while QVC’s website attracts over 758 million visits each year. Yes, QVC will have to get viewers used to the idea of turning to it for sports content, but the company has the marketing budget and the distribution to do so.   This is also a novel take on the notion that modern audiences want more interactive live sports consumption. We’ve seen muti-screen formats tested before, while the likes of Fubo have also tried to infuse sports betting overlays on their broadcasts. Can QVC learn from these use cases to create a truly hybrid user experience?   The future of sports broadcasting beyond the major networks and largest streaming platforms may very well lie in partnerships like these, where retail providers integrate third-party content to keep new and existing consumers inside their ecosystem. We’ve seen how powerful this combination can be from Amazon’s own decision to air NFL, MLB, and English Premier League games on Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios. iCapital’s recent article says that “KKR has launched perhaps the most groundbreaking vehicle in the form of a conglomerate or operating company structure that owns and operates businesses alongside KKR private equity strategies and is available to accredited investors. The first-of-its-kind structure provides direct access to a diversified, fully drawn portfolio of KKR private and growth equity portfolio companies owned and operated across the globe.” Groundbreaking? First-of-its-kind? If by groundbreaking, they mean a model that Tide Rock has been successfully doing for over a decade with returns higher than any other PE fund according to Pitchbook, then sure, I guess it’s pretty cool. What's truly innovative about our approach is not just our structure, but also our performance—delivering strong returns by directly owning and operating a diversified portfolio. As an early stage VC, I have a keen interest in policies that foster innovation, new business starts, and business growth. Under the Biden-Harris administration, there has been a record number of new businesses started. VP Harris has set a goal of exceeding that record in her first term, aiming to foster 25 million new business applications. But beyond getting started, new businesses need environments and opportunities that are conducive to growth. And that’s exactly what VP Harris has in store.
