Here's how you can ignite creative thinking and foster innovation in your team.
Here's the most powerful model I've experienced for inspiring a creative team. Define what's essential. That is often how the organization attracts resources. If someone doesn't buy into this, they may be a great person, but they are not right for this team. Recruit a talented team with diverse experience and relationships to accomplish what is essential. Ensure the team has the resources they need. Ensure the team clearly understands how they will be held accountable, down to specific metrics. Then, let go and allow creative people to do what only they can do to excel. I've never worked with a creative person who didn't love the bargain, "Tell me what I have to be accountable for, then get out of my way and let me do my job."

Here's how you can handle power dynamics with your boss in a Venture Capital career.
Understand what your boss is most highly motivated to achieve. Helping your boss be a hero in achieving that is your job and what makes you valuable to him or her. The more specific you are, down to a specific metric, the more closely aligned you will be with your boss. Hopefully, as your boss advances, you are brought along, too. Even if that doesn't happen, on your resume, you can document that you helped your prior boss achieve a specific metric that was very important to him or her. That makes you valuable in seeking another position. Ultimately when you're the boss, you'll have a clear model for how to help those below you best succeed in advancing their careers by helping you succeed.

How do you find the perfect team for your entrepreneurial venture?
It is incredibly difficult to get the right people on board if you don't know them well. Many of the best entrepreneurs reassemble teams they have led in other organizations. When mistakes are made, difficult decisions need to be made as quickly as possible. Problems in selecting people rarely ever get better with time.

How do you find the perfect team for your entrepreneurial venture?
The greatest entrepreneurs didn't start with a statement of values and vision. They had a passion about how they were going to change the world that attracted others to work with them like moths to a light. Most, like Jobs, Gates, and Musk, were so insanely driven they were miserable to with for, yet many people did because they were going somewhere big.
