We couldn't agree more with Rivian's Alan Hoffman "the LCFS features prominently in the state’s climate Scoping Plan. It’s no wonder, given the policy’s many benefits for transportation electrification. The state’s EV goals mean that it has never been more important to ensure that the LCFS is strong and stable." If policymakers and environmental advocates are serious about lowering #GHG emissions as quickly as possible, in order to both speed reductions in air pollution to disproportionately-impacted communities AND minimize costs for transitioning to cleaner fuels, they need to take a technology-neutral "all of the above" approach that leverages the innovation of markets and economic incentives. California Air Resources Board's Low Carbon Fuel Standard has already exceeded every transportation fuel carbon intensity-reduction target set, and as Rivian and other EV industry companies and LCFC members like EVgo, CleanFuture, Inc., and Bridge to Renewables (BTR) have repeatedly noted: "Under the LCFS, clean fuels earn credits that producers of dirty fuels buy to achieve compliance with the standard. The resulting market multiplies the business opportunity for companies up and down the clean transportation value chain. In Rivian’s case [...] fast chargers generate credits when they charge EVs on the road, while fleet owners earn credits when they charge our vans and trucks in their depots. The hardcore anti-LCFS contingent has tried to snooker the public into believing that California's #LCFS is bad for the state's electric vehicle market. Rivian, one of the fastest emerging electric vehicle manufacturers in the world, doesn't agree. The EV maker this week published an op-ed in Capitol Weekly voicing strong support for the LCFS and its benefits for wider EV adoption. From the piece, in very simple terms: "In Rivian’s case, our Rivian Adventure Network fast chargers generate credits when they charge EVs on the road, while fleet owners earn credits when they charge our vans and trucks in their depots. 5B is thrilled to have supported WattEV, Inc. on its fourth electric truck charging depot in Bakersfield, California, and the world’s first electric truck stop featuring a solar-powered microgrid with a battery energy storage system (BESS). Capable of megawatt rapid charging (MCS), the 119-acre site is designed, owned, and operated by WattEV. WattEV opted for our pre-wired 5B Maverick solar array system, ensuring rapid deployment and minimal installation costs, and marking a significant step towards zero-emissions freight transport in California. As well as being the fastest technology to build solar farms in the world, the 5B Maverick generates roughly 2x the power off the same footprint of land as conventional solar. EV range will only increase each year as battery prices continue to fall and brands ramp production of new EVs. The major question is...when will award winning Chinese vehicles be allowed into the US without tariffs or at a reduced level? It would decimate domestic factories; but are we protecting companies that failed to innovate fast enough? Are we doing what is in our best interest long term and allowing the free market to determine what vehicles a consumer purchases? An example of the tremendous market shift is Tesla's recent loss in market share to BYD in particular and the long list of upstart brands. This will only accelerate as they can't currently compete on pricing. Some of this has to due with battery pack prices. It will be interesting to see how this develops in the next few quarters.

I wrote nearly a decade ago that to win with EVs the OEMs needed to build an ecosystem. It’s good these companies are finally taking EVs seriously, but if they want to catch and overtake Tesla public charging is only half the equation. To truly win this market these companies need to focus on solutions for EV charging at home.

According to the Transportation Energy Institute's EV Charging Market Status State and Province Biannual Report, publicly accessible EV charging stations continue to rise year-over-year. By the end of Q4 2023, the total number of publicly accessible chargers across all cities reached 195,126, marking a 7.6% increase since Q2 2023 and a 20.9% growth since Q4 2022. This expansion highlights the accelerating momentum in the electric vehicle infrastructure sector, with significant growth in both DC Fast Charging (DCFC) and Level 2 (L2) charging deployments. Level-2 chargers are more common, with about 12% of ramps having a Level-2 charger within a quarter-mile and 41% within a mile, leaving over 80,000 ramps without a Level-2 charger within a mile. In the US, there are approximately 14,500 ramps along the Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs). The distribution of DC fast chargers (DCFC) along these ramps mirrors the broader trend: 8% of ramps have a DCFC within a quarter-mile and 27% within a mile, meaning over 10,000 AFC ramps are more than a mile away from the nearest DCFC station. If the constant headlines of car manufacturers pulling back EV production due to high costs and lack of demand isn't enough of an indication that California's emission standards are too aggressive for industries to keep up with, this goes to show that there's a massive disconnect between the policymakers who set these standards and the very businesses and people whose lives are unfairly shaped by these unrealistic policies. #DisruptiveTech 🟢 Even as the electric vehicle (EV) market faces a cooling period due to consumer concerns about high prices and inadequate charging infrastructure, the long-term future of mobility clearly leans toward electrification. To solidify their positions in this burgeoning domain for the long term, automakers worldwide are pouring in billions of dollars to build EV battery-related infrastructure. Despite a dip in EV sales of late, the battery production momentum is not slowing down, reflecting the industry's anticipation of an inevitable electric future. Historically dominated by China, the global lithium-ion battery supply chain is shifting. To avoid a repeat of the pandemic-induced chip shortage crisis, automakers, in 2021, began pledging to build EVs and batteries domestically. This has led to numerous commitments to produce North American-made batteries by 2030. The U.S. government has been pivotal in this transition, with the Inflation Reduction Act enforcing stringent eligibility requirements to develop a domestic battery supply chain and reduce reliance on China. EVs with battery components made by foreign adversaries no longer qualify for a tax credit of up to $7,500, accelerating investments in U.S.-based battery production. This legislative push has further accelerated investments in U.S.-based battery production.
