I’ve seen quite a few HEL systems out there that seem imminently capable of addressing this Group I & II threat profile. One question I’ve had regarding the eventual deployment of HEL systems is what will the maintenance cycle look like? For kinetics such as rifles there is a functions check and test firing. How rigorous and data driven will the functional test firing be for HELs that have received lower echelon maintenance?

AcqUIsiTiON NErDs!!! How often have you heard (or said?) those famous words "The FAR won't allow this..."? More often than not, that's NOT TRUE. Check out this assessment from an IG Audit Report on the 3DELRR project: "...the Air Force’s interpretation of funding guidance was incorrect. Air Force officials stated that they believed the initial production units could not be purchased in the rapid prototyping August 24, 2023 (U) path using procurement funding. However, the DoD Financial Management Regulation authorizes the use of procurement funding." Yup, the Air Force believed the policy didn't allow a particular approach, but turns out, that approach IS authorized (and would have led to BETTER results). I wish this was an isolated case, but it's a pattern I see pop up over and over again. Read the full IG report here (if you dare!):
