Here's my progression of industry benchmarks. It's fun to be working in a space where benchmarks are developing and really matter. Phase 1. There's a new workload that vendors and customers don't understand - make a benchmark. Phase 2. Everybody competes, races for the highest numbers. Customers tend to want a proof of concept before they buy. (shady stuff happens here) Phase 3. Everyone starts to understand the workload, vendors start to drift off, customers trust sizing instead. Phase 4. Upstarts use benchmarks, now mostly abandoned by the original players, to prove they can compete. This is a nice write up on ML Perf Storage with some thoughts on how to interpret the results.

I was fortunate enough to join Jared Quincy Davis, Jeff Denworth and Nitin Agrawal in conversation with Rob Garlick to discuss AI infrastructure, chips, data centers, storage, and energy. The work being done by these companies (Foundry, VAST Data, and CoreWeave) is astonishing: The space between hardware / bare metal machines and the kind of engineering that companies like You.com does for AI applications is vast and complex. AI has always co-evolved with the hardware it runs on. When I was in research, I would occasionally get state of the art chips hand delivered from NVIDIA (not Jensen though 😄), and I felt the pain of writing some of the first research code that ran PyTorch on TPUs. Strapping your GPUs together and writing all your own distributed training code while debugging cryptic errors that no one had encountered before was a valuable learning experience but not something most AI startups can afford the time to do. These companies are doing that incredibly difficult work at ever larger scales. They are bringing new paradigms of computing from the deep, protected corners of the AI research community to all. That’s a powerful accelerant for AI. And it is empowering a new generation of founders and builders to move quickly and do things that they couldn’t have done before. The continued progress of AI to a large extent depends on companies like these. Thanks to Citi and Sirisha Kadamalakalva for organizing it all!

Adding to what Ahmed Guetari mentions, this is the result of #F5 bringing containerized and #Kubernetes native #BIG-IP technology into DPU form factors. The same amazing BIG-IP that our customers have trusted over these past years is now enabling their future success in AI work loads on #NVIDIA DPUs.

There are many important consideration's when deploying #datacenters - land, power, water, fiber access, and throw in a state tax incentive as a kicker. Over time, developers will increasingly need to consider a social license to operate as part of their decision tree, to avoid impacting neighbors who see it as a negative. #Sustainability improvements and heat reuse will play a role here, but it will likely take #regulation to move the needle. https://lnkd.in/g3s7_Mjq
