If ‘consistency is key,’ then I have much to be proud of—or maybe not—as I go down a social media rabbit hole every night. A peek into my Instagram feed will have you convinced ‘you need that viral product in your routine’ or ‘you are missing out on the launch of the year.’ But thanks to my role as a beauty editor, the first order of business is to try, test and review if new products and features really work. 🗣 The industry has been buzzing since EXPRESS filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and announced the closure of at least 100 store locations. Over the last year, FULLBEAUTY Brands has quietly been building a #plussize fashion empire. In early 2023, the 120-year-old company owned 12 plus- and inclusive-size brands including Swimsuits For All and Roaman’s, which it had acquired over the decades. But in the last 12 months, it has added to its portfolio three #DTC and digitally-native plus-size brands, including CUUP , the formerly Walmart-owned ELOQUII and, most recently, Dia & Co. The acquisitions speak to FullBeauty’s continued growth, which reflects how brands from outside the plus-size space, like Old Navy and Walmart, are giving way to more specialized retailers. Although Stephanie Lin and her brother started their womenswear brand KESTAN as an e-commerce company, the real breakthrough for their online presence came when they opened their first brick-and-mortar store. The retail stores succeeded because they were able to deliver an entire brand experience rather than just be content to try and sell products. After that, they started to see their social media platforms differently—as a chance to bring the retail experience to customers shopping with them from all around the world. They started looking for creative ways to make customers feel like they were enjoying a relaxing day shopping IRL. Ultimately, this approach has led to increased traffic and engagement both online and in-store. Fashion’s freelancer economy is having a growth spurt. A recent round of layoffs saw jobs go at retailers including Matches and Farfetch, and magazines such as i-D. These new freelancers are entering a saturated market, one which swelled during the pandemic and during the subsequent ‘great resignation’ of 2021 and 2022. As competition for work intensifies, financial insecurity and burnout are only becoming more pervasive. A handful of startups are trying to bridge the gap between brands and talent to tackle these issues. As the challenges escalate, there is an opportunity for these talent platforms to grow — but they also face the reality of changing deeply ingrained habits. Last week, Catch's CEO and cofounder Nico Perdomo sat down with WWD's Jenny B. Fine to discuss the "P1 ➡ P2 challenge" and how brands are addressing it. Getting a beauty shopper from their first purchase (P1) to their second (P2) is harder than ever these days, due largely to a combination of: i) more brands than ever competing for the same customer (and new ones popping up every day!), ii) a noisy digital landscape that bombards shoppers with conflicting messages, iii) a savvy next-gen consumer whose shopping habits don't align with the old-school loyalty and retention playbooks. So... what works? Consumers are increasingly engaging with brands that meet them where they are and make P2 feel easy. For some, that's free shipping or same-day delivery.
