Don’t Drop The Ball Perhaps you saw the infamous 5th inning of the final game of the 2024 World Series between the Yankees and Dodgers and witnessed the dropped fly ball by Aaron Judge which started a cascade of unforced errors, squandering of a 5 run lead, loss of momentum, and ultimately loss of the series. The Yankees had the game plan mapped out that night but ultimately snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory. As I am en route to #BioEurope in Stockholm this week, my mind turns to applications for emerging biotech organizations charged with bringing the hope of new treatments from discovery to the market. The risk of dropping the ball is high and the consequences of doing so are significant. Aaron Judge would have been well-served to perhaps use 2 hands for that ill-fated catch which has now been so extensively chronicled. Really exciting because a large portion of these somatic mutations are from young patients with early stage tumors (not heavily pretreated like most cohorts). 10,478 patients spanning 35 cancer types recruited to the UK 100,000 Genomes Project. Using WGS, they found 330 candidate driver genes, including 74 that are new to any cancer. They estimate that approximately 55% of patients studied harbor at least one clinically relevant mutation, predicting either sensitivity or resistance to certain treatments or clinical trial eligibility. A fascinating article in Nature Aging this week found, based on multiomic analysis, that human aging has two accelerating inflection points: age 44, and age 60.
