“I have consistently been impressed with the quality and attention to detail of Qingbin’s data science work. Qingbin and I worked together as part of a data science team for over a year, and Qingbin’s knowledge of data science, statistical methods, and software engineering skills continually made our work better than originally planned. Often times, rough guidelines of business drivers and implementation ideas would be given to Qingbin, and he would immediately have ideas for how to improve the quality of the results. He could research abstract ideas and create models and tools of his own ideas with very little guidance, and the results were consistently outstanding. In addition, his skills as a programmer generally alleviated the need for a paired programmer to get code into production. Given a list of desired output formats, Qingbin would write code that could be run immediately on production machines.”

Over the last few months, Winston Huang and I have been mapping the inner workings of simple LLMs. We built an app that extracts interpretable "circuits" from models using the GPT-2 architecture, which explain how specific inputs influence token predictions. While some tutorials present hypothetical examples of how the layers within an LLM produce predictions, this app provides concrete examples of information flowing through the system. You can see, for example, the formation of features that search for simple grammatical patterns and trace their construction back to the use of more primitive features. Substrate
Today, we’re launching Substrate. We’re also announcing our $8M Series Seed led by Lightspeed. We believe the most robust, reliable, and productive uses of AI are when many models are used in coordination with each other, with regular programming mixed in. Most people building with AI already know this. But the available tools are suboptimal, unless you work for Google. For the rest of us, we’re left creating an unwieldy mess of chained API calls to multiple providers, with many roundtrips in between. We took a hard look at this state of affairs, and recognized how much it is stifling progress. Building large multi-step AI workloads requires sophisticated high-performance tooling and infrastructure. Nobody wants to deal with more tooling and infrastructure… but everyone would benefit from simple, intuitive interfaces that abstract away a powerful system underneath. No tooling, no infrastructure – just elegant abstractions.
