I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Todd Feist from IREM about the challenges and opportunities building owners and operators face managing the increasingly complex energy infrastructure within their buildings. Speaking plainly, over time building systems age, breaks down, get patched, and inevitably fall short of meeting the evolving needs we place on our buildings. Partnering with an integrated design and construction team (like Ecosystem 😉 ) valuing a holistic analysis of needs and solutions is the surest path to improve diverse goals and outcomes for retrofits in occupied buildings.

#Coordination Whether its amongst trades, with the client, end user or design team, coordination is a critical function of every successful project. Coordination and forecasting especially ring true when working on intricate major medical spaces. This is the above ceiling infrastructure for the new EP Lab at UCONN Farmington, and as you can see there is limited margin for error. #BismarkConstruction #HealthcareConstruction

NYC DOB Code - Major update *** Are you ready for this change? Effective 12/11/24 , initial DOB filings , permits initially issued after this date, for new buildings or major alterations for buildings that are 7 stories or 75’ H will require a site safety coordinator and a dob approved site safety plan in addition to having a cs - construction superintendent. Current code only included new buildings or major alterations that are 10 stories, 125’ H or buildings that have a ground floor foot print over 100,000 sqf as “site safety projects” - “major buildings“. Lets all be ready and prepared for this major change. Try to have your ssp’s ready in advance so you can file them as soon as the new code update kicks in. #nycdob #sitesafetyjobs #majorbuildingsrule #crsg #ll147

Does your construction company have a #leanconstruction strategy or are you just praying to Buddha, Allah, Jesus, or whoever would listen? Everyone knows that if they want BIM and VDC to work, they need a director for VDC. And a budget for it. Everyone knows that if they want safety to happen, they need a director of safety. A budget for it and a corporate strategy. Why in the world do people expect lean construction to happen without the same investment and people in place. Most companies think they have a program when in fact they have nothing except a few people interested in lean. They don’t have a director for lean construction. They don’t have a budget for their lean training and development. They don’t include lean into their annual corporate objectives. And no, you can’t have a superintendent or an operations manager take on lean as a part time job. It doesn’t work that way. So for the most part, most companies do not have a lean program. They think they do but they don’t. They just have hopes and prayers to a higher being hoping that everything will turn out great. But as we know in design and construction, you have to make a conscious effort. Relying on prayers alone is never a smart business strategy. So if you don’t have a functioning lean program at your company ask why. If you don’t have a budget for lean within your company ask why. If you don’t have a dedicated director, VP, or lean champion ask your company why.
