The Power of a Clear Vision: My Journey Towards Principal Engineer As I sit here, reflecting on my journey in tech, I can't help but think about the importance of having a clear vision for your career. For me, that vision has always been crystal clear: becoming a Principal Engineer within the next decade. This goal isn't just a title I'm chasing. It's a beacon that guides every decision I make, every skill I develop, and every challenge I take on. It's the voice in my head asking, "Is this bringing you closer to where you want to be?" I remember when I first started as a junior developer, wide-eyed and overwhelmed. The road to Principal Engineer seemed impossibly long. But I knew that's where I wanted to be, and that knowledge has been invaluable. It's pushed me to go beyond my comfort zone, to take on projects that scared me, and to speak up in meetings when I had ideas, even if my voice shook. It's what drove me to spend weekends learning new technologies and evenings poring over system design books. This vision has been my North Star, especially during tough times. When faced with burnout or imposter syndrome, I'd ask myself, "If you keep going at this pace, will you reach your goal?" Sometimes the answer was no, which was the wake-up call I needed to course-correct. Recently, I nailed a two-hour technical interview for a Tech Lead position at a major company. While circumstances beyond my control meant I didn't get the role, the experience was validation. It showed me I'm on the right path, and that my efforts are paying off. But it's not just about the technical skills or the titles. It's about knowing your worth and continuously increasing it. I have a clear idea of what I want to earn in five years, in ten years. It's ambitious, but it pushes me to constantly upskill and prove my value. To those of you early in your careers or feeling lost: set a goal. Make it specific. Make it ambitious. Let it be your guiding light. Ask yourself regularly, "Am I on track? What do I need to do differently?" Your goal might change over time, and that's okay. The power is in having direction, in knowing where you're headed. It transforms your career from a series of jobs into a purposeful journey. So, I ask you: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 10? What's your beacon? What's your next milestone? And more importantly, what are you doing today to get there?" If you don't have one, I urge you to find it. Let it guide you through the fog of day-to-day work and office politics. Let it be the reason you push yourself when you're tempted to coast. Remember, your career is a marathon, not a sprint. I have always spoke about tech and web development on here but this is a side of me that I hold dearly. Yes! I do research and I love it. Walk with me. Nature has many yet unlocked potentials that we (humans) are yet to unlock. Let me get straight into it. In the ancient times where "medicine" was required due to illnesses, we turned to plants and they served their purpose. However, plants differ, at peak diversity, in specie. As we have advanced and evolved, so has illnesses and microbes alike. So it begs for "the hunt" for evolved practices and innovative methods. A host of illnesses like Diabetes have been researched on but this particular specie of plant (Carpolobia alba) caught my attention. Its nutritional profile was significant enough on personal note to be classified as a supplement. Further research on it showed it resemblance to a drug already in the market that is used to manage diabetes A much more modern in-depth analysis on classification, pathway, microbe degradation or appreciation will be needed to determine its efficacy level on diabetes. This spurs questions in my head like: What other plant has this composition? Do their combination help increase efficacy? Besides hitting its target, how does it affect other areas which are not of interest? What kind of bond-relationship do these plants' biochemical structure possess? For this week’s Impact Challenge, I chose to address low engagement in my software development track’s WhatsApp group. To encourage more interaction, I introduced a “Daily Code Challenge.” The idea was simple: I posted a basic coding problem and invited everyone to solve it within a few hours. I also shared a helpful resource on debugging and encouraged group members to share their own favorite tools or tips for problem-solving. Within a few hours, I noticed a marked increase in engagement. Several members posted their solutions to the challenge, while others responded with likes, comments, and even questions about different approaches. A few members also shared additional resources, which led to a productive thread that seemed to benefit everyone. By the end of the day, the group felt more active and collaborative, with people helping each other, sharing ideas, and exchanging useful insights. This quick action made a measurable impact, as engagement noticeably increased in the group. I'm starting a 100 days of code challenge! 🥹 I've longed to do this for a long time now but school work didn't allow me. 🥲 I've been very inspired by some amazing people: Numerous, Leonard, Oluwagbemileke & Praise. 🤗 So during this challenge, I'd like to take time to re-learn the essentials of cloud computing: - Linux - Networking - Python OOP However, this challenge will be focused on building projects rather than blowing through courses. I'll just use relevant documentation where necessary. And I really think that's the best way for anyone to learn. I already have some experience so I want to develop my resourcefulness and adaptability skills. Currently, in the AWS re/Start program I'm currently a part of of Edoinnova, we're learning about Linux and moving on to networking tomorrow so with the base knowledge attained, I can find stuff to work on that'll solidify my understanding. I also want to take a different approach to documenting my journey as I've noticed people like creating wikis to show they know much about the topic. But that can be done using ChatGPT So I'd like to do something ChatGPT can't. I'll just write about my learning experience for the day, the struggles I face and the successes I make. AI doesn't struggle to write code now, does it? 😏 I'll also try to explain stuff I learn about using metaphors and analogies so they land easily with my non-techie audience, which I found out is a lot of you guys... 🥲🫣 I'll be posting both on Twitter and LinkedIn so I might have to be posting here everyday. Not sure yet but in time, I'll understand how to go about it. My Twitter is in the comments section. In my opinion, WFH is a perfect work life balance. Your tech queen can be a career woman and an amazing wife and mom all at the same time! No one has to suffer for the other to thrive! After working from home since COVID, I'm more convinced than ever: remote work is the future. Here’s what I see fading: → Asking permission for WFH → Five days locked in an office → Losing hours in traffic → Sacrificing family time → Nine hours stuck in a cubicle And what’s emerging: → The freedom to work from anywhere → Flexible schedules that fit life → More time with loved ones → Commute-free days → Teams connecting across time zones Who wouldn’t love to work remotely! Or hybrid at least!! Now, did you know that most tech jobs do not require you to be on site fully? You can even be in Barbados on a holiday but still working.
