Your role is changing, and with it, the dynamics of your team are shifting. Perhaps some team members’ roles have been eliminated. Perhaps organizational structures and team compositions are under review, and with so much change happening, it's natural to feel overwhelmed and uncertain. More questions seem to arise as clarity remains elusive. It’s completely understandable to experience a surge of negative thoughts and emotional reactions in response to these changes. But staying stuck in this mindset is not the healthiest option. So, what can you do to break free from this headspace? Try REFRAMING. 📢 Reframing is a cognitive technique that helps you shift your perspective and reinterpret a situation's meaning. Why give it a shot? Because it can build personal resilience and enhance your emotional well-being. 📢 When faced with a challenging thought, it's easy to fall into the trap of believing your current outlook is the only one. Reframing interrupts the cycle of negative thinking and encourages you to ask yourself questions like, "Is there another way to view this situation?" or, "How can I approach this from a future-oriented perspective?" 📢 Think of reframing as drawing out your inner coach. It’s all about shifting your viewpoint to find a more constructive angle on the challenges you're facing. Is Gen Z really all that different from other generations in terms of what they want in the workplace? A recent article in Agility PR says one of the biggest challenges leaders are facing in 2024 is the heightened expectations of this “brash new generation” entering business life. For my "On Leadership" column, I turned to local leaders and asked for their observations about zoomers' needs and how leaders can be addressing changing worker expectations in today’s marketplace. Here is what Monica Friedman, executive vice president, chief human resources officer at LCS, had to say: "I believe this isn’t an issue unique to any one generation in our workforce. Every person has needs and wants that they expect from their employer. For example, the reasons a 55-year-old desires more flexibility may differ from the reasons of a 22-year-old, but the desire for flexibility may be the same. As leaders, it is important that we provide multiple opportunities for team members to share with us what is important to them. We will never be able to meet every need, but by establishing a pattern of asking for feedback, responding to feedback, and then checking in, we create a culture where each person feels heard and valued. For some, the most important thing may be an opportunity for growth and development in their career. For others, schedule flexibility with opportunities to connect with colleagues in a meaningful way may be most significant. Communication is key!" As we approach late August, many of us in the San Francisco Bay Area feel the change in the air. As our kids head back to school, we are reminded that this time of year brings a wave of changes for all of us. In my experience coaching and mentoring leaders, I’ve noticed that this transition often takes us by surprise. The changes in schedules, the increase in business activity, and the emotional weight of the season can create a perfect storm of stress if we’re not prepared. However, with some foresight and strategy, this period can actually set the stage for a strong finish to the year. Here are three key strategies to help you navigate this time of year with confidence: 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞: Implement a "Sunday Strategy Special"—a 20-minute block to outline your week's priorities. Include team schedules, key meetings, and personal commitments. Share this with your leadership team and encourage them to do the same with their teams. This creates alignment and clarity across the organization. 𝐁𝐞 𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦: While keeping your overarching vision intact, be ready to adjust short-term objectives. Focus on 2-3 key initiatives and remain willing to reallocate resources. Remember, many team members are facing changing demands at home, especially parents with children returning to school. Offer flexibility and support wherever possible. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬: Foster a culture of self-care. Encourage regular exercise, ensure ample sleep, and promote hydration. A Chance Encounter, a 500-Mile Friendship, and a Reminder to Connect Scrolling through Facebook last week, a familiar name caught my eye – Dr. Joelle Hood, Ed.D. A fellow leadership trainer I'd connected with years ago before moving from Southern California to Northern California. A flurry of messages later, and we were making plans for dinner, a reunion long overdue. Sunday, I carved out precious time from my weekend to accommodate Joelle's busy schedule. And it was worth every second. Joy filled the air as we caught up on life and shared business insights with Joelle's colleague, Janelle. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of connection – of reaching out, making time, and nurturing relationships, even when life takes us in different directions. This unexpected reunion taught me a valuable lesson: Be intentional about connecting. Don't let busy schedules or distance get in the way of fostering meaningful relationships. Reach out to that old friend, schedule a coffee date with a colleague, or even just send a quick message to someone you admire. You never know what amazing connections and opportunities may arise. Who could you reach out to today to rekindle a connection? Remember, the most valuable connections are often the ones we invest time and effort in.
