I LOVE the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Epi Data Briefs that breakdown mental health prevalence by various social, economic, and environmental factors. Headlines below, but I strongly encourage you to take a deeper look at the brief. As a whole, about 1 in 10 NYC adults have depression (13%). This jumps to: 1 in 5 for NYC adults - aged 18-24 (20%) - experiencing food insecurity (20%) - who have asthma (20%) - who have two or more chronic health conditions (21%) 1 in 4 for NYC adults who - have above average financial stress (25%) - identify as bisexual (26%) - identify as multiracial (27%) - have ever experienced intimate partner violence (28%) Almost 2 in 5 for NYC adults who - identify as a gender other than cisgender (38%) - rate their overall health as fair or poor (39%) How do you or will you use this data? One way I use it: to demonstrate how the social drivers of health and access initiatives at United Way of New York City and the Department of Community Based Programs at Family Health Centers @ NYU Langone Health help address mental health. Kudos to Kinjia Hinterland and her team for presenting a wealth of data in an approachable, digestible format.

Yesterday, MHC joined with non-profits from across the state to rally for increased funding to community non-profits. Despite seven years of a state surplus, the nonprofits in our state continue to be neglected and have been for nearly 20 years. Minimal increases aren't keeping up with inflation, creating more of a budget cut than an increase. We are supporting the lives of over 500,000 residents of CT and our resources are limited. I hope the stories and passion shared at the rally is being considered by the state reps and Governor but we can't solely rely on their considerations. We need to take action to ensure our programs are funded and able to provide the necessary supports and services to our communities. This short webinar truly blew my mind! I felt the intensity of learning and could resonate deeply with so many insights shared. Though I haven't personally navigated the healthcare system or dealt with cancer, the challenges around system navigation, the immense value of advocacy, and the power of lived experiences in driving systemic change are all areas I connect with-especially in my work with immigrants and as an immigrant myself. This webinar on Advancing Cancer Care through Advocacy and Lobbying opened a new perspective on how our human experiences can resonate and, collectively, how we can push for meaningful changes. A huge thank you to Dr. Sevtap Savas, PhD for sharing this opportunity and creating a space for me and others in the community to learn about these critical issues. Here’s my takeaway from today’s webinar: Advocacy vs. Lobbying: Advocacy builds grassroots support, while lobbying follows a systematic approach to engage government. Despite its reputation, lobbying isn’t a “dirty word”—it’s a powerful way to present solutions and influence policymakers to bring government resources and attention to an issue. The Art of Lobbying: Effective lobbying requires a consistent, knowledgeable, and strategic approach. It’s crucial to understand how to solve the problem, who to reach out to, and the best way to communicate with them. Timing is key, and knowing the right moment- such as election cycles - can amplify impact. The Personal Touch: A handwritten letter might seem old-fashioned, but it stands out in a sea of emails, showing the recipient the time and care invested in the message. A clear, concise appeal, directed to the right person at the right time, can make a real difference. Lived Experience Matters: The panelists—including Dylan Buskermolen,  Dr. Don Desserud, Kimberley Thibodeau, and Dr. Sevtap Savas, PhD highlighted how patient perspectives add an irreplaceable dimension to advocacy. The CAPO Advocacy Committee is a shining example of combining expertise with the lived experiences of cancer survivors, patient advocates, and healthcare professionals, making the case for an inclusive, patient-centred healthcare policy. I am deeply inspired by the commitment and knowledge shared today, which is relevant to so many areas beyond healthcare. #CancerCare #Advocacy #Lobbying #SystemicChange #PatientCentredCare #Community

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: HOW A CASE FOR SUPPORT DEVELOPS Most people consider The Case for Support the main ‘sales piece,’ the colorful, expensively printed brochure that is part of a typical capital campaign.  An effective case rarely starts out in finished form, as Athena sprung from the head of Zeus fully formed in Greek mythology. In its first stage of life, the Case may simply be a typewritten draft, marked DRAFT to encourage input.  In whatever form, the Case is the raison d’etre for why funds are needed and how they will build and expand, or simply preserve or strengthen, a cause deserving of philanthropic support. It must be clear, compelling, and credible. The most effective wording often comes from the comments of Board members and donors who read the initial drafts. The Case is a tool to educate and engage leadership. It must provoke comments from (a) donors with the capacity to make gifts of $1 million, $2.5 million, $5 million, $10 million and more as well as (b) potential leadership of a Capital Campaign Cabinet. It will also (c) form the basis for grant proposals for individual projects, (d) justify annual funding and project support, and (e) help individuals to justify making planned gifts and bequests for endowment. The immediate role for a Case Statement is to have a subject for discussion in initial conversations with the inner circle of Board members and other long-time contributors. It is the equivalent of a preliminary Master Plan. Think of is as the block of granite sculptor starts with before chipping away portions to reveal a final work of art. Board members and early interview subjects are the sculptors, guiding the phrasing of the eventual finished product. A good Case for Support emerges after four stages of development, to be described in a post later this week.

Melinda French Gates has announced an open call: Action for Women’s Health, run by Pivotal Ventures. Lever for Change, the same organization that ran MacKenzie Scott’s open call, will manage the process. The aim, Pivotal and its partners say, is to identify nonprofits working around the country and the world — especially those who wouldn’t normally cross French Gates’ path or be invited to apply for her money. Each awardee will receive flexible funding between $1 million and $5 million. Eligible organizations serve women and have a record of improving women’s mental or physical health. They should center equity in their approach and be poised to scale their work to strengthen the health of more women. I got my #cholangiocarcinoma diagnosis when I was 39. One of the things I don't have is 'long-term strategy'. We are dealing with my cancer one step at a time. Today it's stable, and when the drug I'm on stops working, I may be lucky to go on another medical trial. There's no cure to my cancer and it may kill me before the government rethinks its cancer strategy. It's time to stop thinking that cancer affects older people. It does, but it increasingly affects people in their working age, like me, or younger. I'd spoken to a fellow #cca patient, who died before being 30 years old. I spoke to the others - in their 30s and 40s - parents of young children, and workers with thriving careers (one was a Head of procurement, the other a director) they also died from CCA. According to one BMJ oncology study (https://lnkd.in/eKVw3AQw) 'the number of under-50s worldwide being diagnosed with cancer has risen by nearly 80% in three decades, while cancer deaths of adults in their 40s, 30s or younger grew by 27%. More than a million under-50s a year are now dying of cancer.' You don't have to look far to see that cancer diagnosis affects more younger people, and takes them away from work, from life, from contributing to societies and communities. AMMF highlights growing incidence of cholangiocarcinoma among younger population, which still puzzles the experts, as there's no common risk factors associated with the onset. Majority of those who I spoke to (also including myself) - we are not obese, not smokers, were fit before the diagnosis and had balanced lifestyle and diet. All governments need to wake up. I wish the new one here in the UK will step up and recognise it as a real threat to this country, taking away lives that can be saved by investment in awareness, research and collaboration. #onecancervoice #bileductcancer #cholangiocarcinoma #ammf #cancer #campaign #uk

One thing I love: talking about gender equality!    I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Gavin Cleaver from the The Lancet about the enormous potential of investing in women’s health and economic opportunity.     Health and economic power also go hand-in-hand. When women are healthy, they can fully participate in the workforce, pursue education, and contribute to their families. When women have access to capital (cash and credit), they can grow their businesses, have a greater say over their finances and their futures budget, and become leaders in their communities and society.    Investing in women’s health and income-earning potential is truly a win for us all.    🎧 Listen to the full episode:
