Toyota has filed a patent for in-wheel electric motors, signaling continued innovation in this area ⚙️. The patent, published by the USPTO on July 18, 2024, focuses on a gear-case design that uses two helical gears and thrust bearings. This setup is designed to handle thrust loads on the gears while minimizing weight 🏋️‍♂️. In-wheel electric motors are significant because they integrate the motor directly into the wheels, potentially improving efficiency and space utilization 🚗. However, this design can increase "unsprung mass," which refers to weight not supported by the vehicle's suspension. Too much unsprung mass can negatively impact ride quality and handling, making Toyota's weight-saving design crucial for performance 🚙. Although patent filings don’t always lead to immediate products, Toyota's consistent interest in this technology suggests ongoing development 🛠️. Ford is trialing AI-powered automated driving technology designed to make the production process more efficient. For the project, vehicles not only drive themselves off the assembly line, they also self-drive to final testing stations and self-charge before parking up ready for delivery to customers. The E-SELF project uses vehicle-to-infrastructure communication to control and monitor vehicles. Antennas and cameras located around the plant can identify hazards in the vehicle’s path, such as a person or another car, and vehicles are slowed or brought to a halt as required. Project leader Laura Heister explains: “We’ve got different test vehicles which are guided by an automated valet parking system which is infrastructure-based. We also have a cobot which plugs in vehicles and charges them up to a certain level. It then disconnects so the vehicle can self-drive to the next station.” Ford is conducting the two-and-a-half-year trial with partners Institute of Automotive Engineering of the Technische Universität Braunschweig and Kopernikus Automotive. ChargerHelp! just published a study where they found that EV charging station uptime across the US is sitting at around 71%. (Gasp!) Or, to frame another way, imagine pulling into a gas station and not being able to get fuel 1 out of every 4 visits. Pretty frustrating, right? PMFHEV is the greenest car (7-3) Series product patents. Unlike normal operations, I will not prevent others from applying for product patents. I also hope and encourage talented engineers from various automotive companies to apply for a series of product patents for PMFHEV. I believe that my original patent is sufficiently creative and novel. The scope of the claims of the subsequent patent needs to avoid the original patent. Therefore, those who purchase the subsequent product patent must also purchase this original patent. I also believe that my original patent is far from perfect. There are still many important technical links to be supplemented. In addition, in countries where utility model patents are established, a series of specifications and models of PMFHEVs of motor vehicle manufacturers need a series of utility model patents to protect. I hope that advanced European and American manufacturers will speed up their pace, and I also expect Chinese and Indian automakers to do so. For the ideal of protecting the environment, I welcome and look forward to the advent of more PMFHEV product patents.
