🚀 I am launching NPIApps.com with a Color Tolerance App and a YouTube channel! 🚀 NPIApps.com will host a collection of productivity apps for engineers in hardware product development. Let's start with the first one: Color Tolerance. TL;DR: In product development, figuring out the tolerance for product color takes a lot of guess work! I wrote an app that allows you to visualize that tolerance, ensuring industrial designers and engineers are on the same page right away. For instance, a 10±1mm hole will be between 9 and 11mm. 🤷‍♂️ But how do you manage this for color? You define a Lab nominal and DeltaE2000 tolerance. For now, think of Lab as RGB, where each color has its variability, resulting in at least six different colors at the limits. How do you even start to imagine that? And more importantly, how do you know if you can accept those colors on your product? Until now, you couldn't! You'd paint your parts, wait weeks to get them, and then measure them to determine your tolerance. That approach is backwards and not based on first principles. 🤯 Consider this: while the hole's size lies between its minimum and maximum values, a color exists in a 3D space 🌐, encompassing all combinations of L_min to L_max, a_min to a_max, and b_min to b_max. Additionally, Delta E2000 tolerance isn't a simple addition or subtraction calculation. It's a complex equation that changes shape based on the Lab values, reflecting how we perceive differences in brightness and color. 🌟 With my Color Tolerance app, you can input your Lab values and adjust the Delta E tolerance slider to get instant feedback on all the possible colors your product can have. Lucid Motors has unveiled a groundbreaking innovation with the RangeXchange - a vehicle-to-vehicle EV charger that allows Lucid owners to assist other electric vehicles. This long-awaited V2V charging system was introduced during the Air launch in 2022 and is now a reality in 2024. Priced at $775, the RangeXchange includes Lucid's mobile charging cable kit and adapter, providing seamless assistance to other EVs. I foresee vehicle-to-vehicle charging becoming a permanent feature in the EV landscape. By the end of the decade, I predict that every EV will integrate this functionality, enabling vehicles to share power when needed. While Lucid sets a new standard with the RangeXchange, General Motors also offers a similar system that requires an adapter for its mobile charging option. Additionally, Ford, Chevrolet, and Tesla have 240-volt outlets in their electric pickup trucks to charge other EVs with portable chargers. This innovative step by Lucid marks just the beginning. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗼𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲? The best prototype is the one that answers your immediate questions as quickly as possible. In the early design stages that might be as simple as a cardboard box if you are wondering about the overall size. In the later stages that might be a nearly complete system with custom circuit boards and injection molded parts intended to be used for final validation testing. When we build prototypes, we like to keep things as simple as possible so we can move quickly.
