As AI systems become more prevalent, teams must use inclusive design to build with marginalized communities to reduce the possibility of harm to their communities caused by AI. Ioana Tanase and I partnered with Hanna Wallach's team to leverage the inclusive design methodology to build generative AI systems that consider the disability community. Here is an overview of the process: 1. Identify the risks by partnering with the disability community to understand fairness-related risks affecting people with disabilities. 2. Turn those findings into a systematized concept to help develop methods to measure the risks. 3. Revise systems as needed. 4. Back in 1997, Adobe blew me away with the capabilities of photoshop. Since then, the key players in the CC suite have been part of my toolkit as a designer. But this article has me concerned as a creative. Adobe has it's haters for sure. The reality is that it holds what is tantamount to a monopoly on the creative industry bar Figma and a handful of other solutions. But if the concerns in this article are to be believed, Adobe, how on earth is this reasonable? There is a growing trend where tech providers are becoming to powerful and this falls into that for me. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆: Adobe can access your project files, including those under NDA, for unspecified reasons. 𝗔𝗜 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: Adobe can potentially use your project files to train its AI tools, without your explicit permission. 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: The terms of service are vague about how Adobe will use your data and don't clearly explain how to opt out of AI training. 𝗡𝗼 𝗢𝗽𝘁-𝗢𝘂𝘁: There is no easy way to opt out of the new terms and continue using Adobe software. 𝗨𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲: You can't uninstall the software without agreeing to the terms, and cancelling your service may come with financial penalties. Hiring for design system roles differs from hiring for other design or engineering roles. Clarifying what makes the roles unique is essential for screening candidates. Here are some nuances that I've found to be helpful. When asking for a presentation, stop using the word "portfolio" and start using "case studies." They tell similar stories but change the expectations from traditional visual portfolios. Include clear bullet points about expected responsibilities; don't just copy and paste requirements from other similar, existing roles. Just because they have the word "designer" or "engineer" in the title doesn't mean the job is the same. If your org still insists on doing a design exercise, tailor it to reflect what you expect from a design system practitioner. The day-to-day is unique, so don't waste time on an exercise that provides no value for you and sets the candidate up for failure. If hiring a design system team manager, you're not hiring an independent contributor and vice versa. Managing and building design systems is a lot of work. One person can't do both roles well simultaneously, so pick one and focus the interview questions on the expected role. What did I miss?
