I’m excited to share my insights on Scarcity Pricing in ERCOT at the Grid Analytics September Meeting. With Real-Time Co-optimization (RTC) set to launch by the end of 2025 and more battery projects coming online, we can expect a shift in battery revenue from ancillary services to energy arbitrage. Does this signal the end of battery opportunities in ERCOT? Absolutely not! Strong load growth and overdue transmission will redefine the value of reliability in relation to electricity prices. The locational advantages of battery projects will be enhanced under RTC, making them a key factor for generating revenue.

Oxylus Energy raised a $4.5 million seed round led by Toyota Ventures and Azolla Ventures with participation from Earth Foundry and Connecticut Innovations. The funding will go toward building a production-scale reactor which the company hopes will help prove its aggressive price targets. Oxylus Energy’s technology bypasses the need for green hydrogen by using a cobalt-based catalyst to facilitate the chemical reaction needed to produce methanol. The catalyst sits inside an electrolyzer, which uses electricity to split water and carbon dioxide molecules. Once the hydrogen, oxygen and carbon atoms are separate, they combine to form methanol (CH3OH) and oxygen (O2). Whether SMR or data centers or both, these giant producers of byproduct heat could be sited close to urban centers, and then the waste heat can be monetized, with district heating and (thermally driven) district cooling. “That means all these giant car companies were developing EVs without additional incentives on their minds. They thought Tesla was going to put them out of business and they needed to compete.” Great analysis! #EVs are coming because they are a better technology that consumers much prefer once they get over the hurdle of learning something new. The same happens with every technology. The incentives only help to develop the early market. They aren’t forcing EVs on anybody. The timeline of auto development is long. This also means that EVs are here to stay whatever the next US administration does. It’s just a question of whether or not US automakers will be able to stay competitive in the EV market.
