During yesterday's LibreQoS APNIC webinar, I posed the question: won't more bandwidth solve these problems? As Herbert Wolverson said, yes, more bandwidth is good, but, still these problems remain if queueing is done incorrectly. Here's my take on why bandwidth alone is not as good as bandwidth + good queueing policies: Generally it was believed that 'data is important, so don't throw it away; hang on to it and send it later'. In practice, this has proven to be suboptimal as two issues may emerge: 1) latency increases for some flows due to heavy demand from other flows using the same bottleneck link, 2) even a single flow can have excessive latency due to aspects of typical TCP behavior (referred to bufferbloat) when the buffers grew large enough that the data being buffered was retransmitted anyway. It turns out that not all data is equally important. Active Queue Management is the art of deciding priorities, both in deciding what data to throw away, but also in allowing some later arriving data to be transmitted ahead of data in another connection that arrived before it. These problems have been studied, and good solutions have been found by using certain queueing policies in routers and switches, referred to as “fq_codel’ and “cake”. These track the different flows not by classifying the data, but by watching the behavior. Flows that send relatively little data (DNS lookups), or at a measured pace (video chat) have priority over flows that send a lot of data as quickly as possible (App and System updates, Video and ISO downloads).

Interesting concept to rename rounds by milestones. But "Series Client Expansion Extension" just doesn't have the same ring to it 😋 . Maybe we can start incorporating it into a descriptor to add context, "Series Seed Extension: client expansion." #startups #venturecapital

How companies purchase software is rapidly evolving, with cloud marketplaces expected to reach $100B in 2026, up from $15B in 2023. Simply put, if you are building and selling cloud software today, it's imperative that you can sell through a cloud marketplace. The journey, however, can be a little confusing, and management can be even harder. With 3x growth last year and 3/4th of our business now flowing through a cloud marketplace, CloudZero switched to Clazar earlier this year to handle our rapid growth, and I couldn't be more thrilled. Trunal B. and Aayush Bahuguna have a big vision for how cloud marketplaces will evolve and how software will be bought and sold in the future. No matter where you are on your journey, learning from them what's coming next is worth your time.

I met Hersh Tapadia and Darrell "Jeremy" Freeman in late 2016 at NC IDEA LABS (formerly Groundwork Labs). We were a bunch of kids working on startups. We thought we had it figured out. You know the rest of that story....we had no clue! But Hersh and Jeremy did have it figured out. Not the specific thing they were working on. They pivoted a few times out of Groundwork Labs. But what they knew how to do as well as any founders was to be curious and listen to their customers. They WERE their customers. They were engineers building for engineers (leaders and teams). They were humble and knew what to ask. They were great at learning. Then they brought on Adam Dahlgren and the founding team felt complete. "Off to the races" means something different to every company. In Allstacks' case, it meant taking the disciplined, thoughtful, thorough approach to growth. And while the team is way more focused on executing for their customers than cheering about a funding announcement, it's also important that they do get their cheers. This is day 1 for these guys. They're building something incredibly big and incredibly impactful. And they're doing it the right way. And as a final side note, when I think of people I want in my corner - to confide in, to learn from, to grow with - I think of Hersh. He's a founder's founder. A CEO's CEO. And one heck of a guy.

As someone who played competitive tennis growing up, Roger Federer’s message at Dartmouth's commencement resonated with me and should inspire startup founders everywhere. As one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Federer pointed out that, despite his huge success in matches, he actually only won 54% of all the points he ever played. He went on to share: "When you’re playing a point, it is the most important thing in the world. But when it’s behind you, it’s behind you... This mindset is really crucial, because it frees you to fully commit to the next point… and the next one after that… with intensity, clarity and focus. The truth is, whatever game you play in life... sometimes you’re going to lose. A point, a match, a season, a job... it’s a roller coaster, with many ups and downs. And it’s natural, when you’re down, to doubt yourself. To feel sorry for yourself. And by the way, your opponents have self-doubt, too. Don’t ever forget that. But negative energy is wasted energy. You want to become a master at overcoming hard moments. That to me is the sign of a champion." When you're a founder, you're in a fierce battle every day - sometimes against competitors, sometimes against markets, and sometimes against yourself. The most successful founders accept that they'll get a lot wrong but have a mindset to adapt and bounce back from setbacks as quickly as possible. It's not about winning every point. ** This is not Financial Advice, so do your own due diligence ** I have been a long time Cisco bull --like forever -- but I was disappointed by CSCO's latest earnings call. I fear, Street is over-modeling FY26 rev growth of >5% Y/Y.. if the past is any indicator, CSCO just cannot sustain over 1% CAGR growth, let alone the 5+% CAGR over a 3 year period. Opinions aside, facts are CSCO 3 yr CAGR is ~1% (70bps to be exact) vs the 5 - 7% CAGR it guided, which btw the company lowered after first offering 7 - 9% CAGR they guided to--even with the backdrop of COVID-led enterprise refresh. Hard to see CSCO's campus opportunity growing here, I'd rather argue we just went through a peak cycle as is evident from the Peak Gross Margins for both CSCO and SPLK. Plus Jayshree Ullal and team at Arista Networks are eating away share in the Fortune-100. $PANW's pjatformization play will likely take a bite out of CSCO's security story, which frankly took too long for CSCO to right! integrating point solutions and stitching them together just doesnt work in security-- CSCO should borrow a page from $FTNT on how to organically grow in security. CSCO has a lot of work ahead of them, SPLK had been on the block for so long, its previous mgmt. significantly under-invested in SPLK and so now CSCO has to step up and drive incremental Opex. Beyond incremental opex, the higher interest rate expense is gonna eat away the EPS.. Streets ~$3.70 FY26 EPS is too high.. would be lucky if they get to $3.50. You know CSCO is in trouble when they got out of their comfort zone of tuck-in acquisitions (typically less than $3B) and bought SPLK for $28B! Remember, Harvard Business School wrote a case study on CSCO's "innovation through acquisition" untill John Chambers disastrous acquisition of Linksys (to expand into consumer market). History is clear the Linksys acquisition was a disaster. Look M&A is hard, Tech M&A is even harder and large tech M&A is next to impossible to be successful. To be fair, CSCO has out executed in the past, its track record in M&A is simply outstanding, one of the reasons why CSCO is still as relevant today as it was during the hight of the "dot com" bubble. CSCO rightfully belonged in the tech leader with the likes of $MSFT, $ORCL. But with the SPLK deal odds are against them -- i suspect this deal was dont by "financial heads" vs the "product leaders". Sure SPLK was big enough to drive a step function improvement in CSCO's software revenue story.. but it also comes with a set of challenges that CSCO is not accustomed to. Odds are against CSCO this time.

Rolling into another day of the Primary Summit. Hit me up if we should connect onsite. Kudos to the Primary Ventures team so far, as yesterday’s Pre-Seed Summit was on point. Mar Hershenson, Benjamin Sun, Chris Douvos, Zach Weinberg, and Graham Pingree all dropping helpful nuggets for fund managers. Some paraphrased highlights: - Chris Douvos (AHOY Capital) - Most fund decks are terrible. Start with your people (not your strategy) and know you have about 6 slides of his attention. - Zach Weinberg (Curie.Bio ) - beleives SF’s AI talent is a significant advantage over NY, wouldn’t build AI in NY. Also questions if VC exits can keep up with VC expansion (generally hilarious and smart Twitter follow) - Mar Hershenson (Pear VC) - VC is so much more competitive now. It’s not enough to be an ex-founder with a great network and domain expertise. Have a better “why you are different” or do something else! - Benjamin Sun (Primary Venture Partners)- still sees arbitrage in going long NY venture (vs. SF). Do the work to keep various influential networking nodes aware of what you’re doing and how you think.
