We're moving beyond cradle-to-gate approaches in impact assessment! 🌍✨ At Green Story, we're excited to partner with IMPACT+ on a pivotal project to explore clothing usage and end-of-life data in the UK. By going deeper into how garments are worn, cared for, and eventually disposed of, we’re aiming to close the loop on fashion’s environmental footprint. Together, we’ll collect critical data across 10 key product categories, creating cradle-to-grave Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) with a “per wear” approach. This data will empower brands and policymakers with actionable insights to design more sustainable clothing systems and products. Our goal? To help shape a future where every piece of clothing has a lower environmental impact, from the first stitch to its final use.

REDUCING THE DISTANCE FROM IDEA TO REALITY WITH 3D The Interline: In an industry where time and success are so tightly linked, why has fashion’s big push into digital product creation not meaningfully moved the hands of the clock? In fashion, the case for better tools has always been made based on their ability to shorten the distance between idea and reality. From the earliest historic inventions to the relentless pursuit of efficiency that fuelled the industrial revolution, innovation and improvement in making clothing has always been a steady pushing-back of the envelope between a new creative idea or an unmet need, and the time, the effort, the equipment, and the degree of compromise required to bring it to life. The rise of 3D tools and workflows in apparel has been no different. Building on top of everything that’s gone before – from flat digital sketching to material scanning – 3D solutions, and the wider digital product creation (DPC) ecosystem that has grown around them, have been positioned as the latest and best way to bring creative design, development, engineering, fit, marketing and a spectrum of other processes into closer alignment.  Today, few brands have not at least experimented with 3D in either creative and technical design or, at the opposite end of the value chain, in consumer-facing sales and marketing, as a stand-in for product photography. 3D design, simulation, and visualisation, and the marketplace and ecosystem of tools and services that feed them, are now being billed – and accepted and adopted – as the next logical progression in a long history of better tools, and also hailed as a revolutionary rethink of what it means to create clothing. But, as the apparel sector enters an era of relative 3D maturity, how far has that revolution actually been realised? And has this changeover of tools really translated into an overhaul of the core mechanics of product design, development, and production? To begin, it’s important to note that, from an industry-agnostic perspective, creating and visualising products in 3D is not a novel or experimental idea. In fact, fashion is one of the last product-centric industries to make the move from two-dimensional sketching to 3D design. In other sectors like automotive, aerospace, furniture, and consumer electronics, 3D drafting has been the de facto standard for some time. In those industries, where absolute 3D maturity is higher, this transition has also demonstrably underpinned a fundamental change to the way products and components make it to the market. In Remake’s recently released 2024 Fashion Accountability Report it states: “for broader, systemic change to actually occur, large and influential brands and retailers need to support legislation and binding agreements that hold fashion companies themselves mutually accountable for the human rights and environmental impacts along their supply chains.” The fashion industry accounts for 2-8% of greenhouse gas emissions Because of this reckless abandon in the endless pursuit of profit over people and planet, the fashion industry has contributed to climate change and climate disasters on a massive scale. While there are many small fashion brands founded on sustainability and ethics, overwhelmingly, big corporations are polluting the planet through exploitation, overproduction and their continued centering and use of harmful materials and fossil fuels. In short, big brands are headed in the wrong direction when it comes to their lofty goals. That is why supporting expanded legislation directed at holding the fashion industry accountable, with bills like the FABRIC Act, is paramount. 🔍 Reimagining Product Discovery in Retail: Insights and Innovations In a series of presentations followed by a panel discussion, Diana Lee, Director of Research & Analysis at The Business of Fashion, interviewed three retail and brand leaders who are reimagining product discovery. They discussed the impact of these initiatives on sales and customer satisfaction. 1️⃣ Marc Hernandez, Digital Product Director at MANGO emphasized the importance of understanding where the customers are, noting that human needs haven't changed much in the last 20 years. He highlighted the role of storytelling in selling fashion and providing inspiration. Opportunities and challenges: 🔹Onsite experiences require extensive detail and data integration. 🔹The need to create a logic for personalization. 🔹The importance of unifying communication across platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, and the website. 🔹The US market is growing but Mango is not yet as recognized there as it is in Europe. 🔹The next step is to better understand US customers, adapting to the diverse regional cultures and weather patterns. 2️⃣ Éva Goicochea, Founder & CEO, at maude , discussed the significance of providing the right context for products and highlighted a successful partnership with Sephora. Opportunities and challenges: 🔹Modern products have universal appeal across countries. 🔹Every advertisement must be gender-inclusive. 🔹Inclusivity should be a core aspect of all operations. 3️⃣ Jan Philipp Wintjes, EVP, Global Omnichannel at HUGO BOSS, stressed the need for bold communication and acknowledged the challenges posed by the company's legacy. He emphasized that quality remains central to everything HUGO BOSS does. Consumers have continued to defy expectation and behave in atypical ways' Some brilliant insights in this thought provoking piece by McKinsey & Company around future consumer trends and insights, including cost-of living crushed middle-income households actually looking to splurge more than ever before. How does this play out in communications? Campaigns should look to really drive desirability with this demographic as they're willing to spend for worthwhile experiences.
