What do you do if your HR consulting business is struggling to attract clients?
Specialization is key. Too many new consultants start out with a mind set that “everyone is potentially my client and I can advise on any area within ABC (HR in this case).” That just lumps you in with everyone else. Think about the problems you LOVE to solve and have a solid track record of solving. Define the type of person/role/organization that would reap the most benefit from having you help them. Declaring “I help manufacturing companies under 1000 employees solve (very specific problem)” means 90% of prospects will pass you by, but the 10% that fit that avatar will think “this person understands us and has a track record of success”, which makes you way more valuable than “I can solve any HR problem for any sized company”.

Food for Others is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) food bank and food rescue organization, working to help those in Northern Virginia who are food insecure. Although the area is considered to be one of the top 5 wealthiest jurisdictions in the country, it still faces a poverty rate of 6 percent. This means, based on U.S. Census figures, that more than 70,000 people in Northern Virginia are living in poverty and 30 percent are children.

Food for Others is a part of Northern Virginia’s safety net for those who need food when an emergency strikes, and for the growing number of working poor who are unable to make ends meet and need to supplement their inadequate food supplies.
Its clients range from new immigrants, to the working poor, to professionals who have lost their jobs. It provides free emergency food assistance to a growing number of families each year in four ways:
(1) Emergency food distribution from a warehouse and mobile sites
(2) Food distribution at 16 sites throughout Northern Virginia
(3) Supplies 16 other organizations with bulk food for soup kitchens, shelters, church programs, etc.
(4) Provides weekend backpack food to food insecure students at 33 elementary schools in Fairfax County
I volunteer an average of 2-4 hours per month with Food For Others. -

The Call of Duty Endowment uses a venture philanthropy approach. In essence, it funds the best organizations it can find—with strings attached. Recipients must demonstrate effective and cost-efficient veteran job placement. When they do, C.O.D.E encourages their growth and operations with additional funding, advice and support.
C.O.D.E. funds deserving non-profits through its annual Seal Of Distinction award process. Organizations able to demonstrate the highest level of effectiveness and efficiency in placing veterans in jobs are in contention for the Seal, which is accompanied by a $30,000 unrestricted grant as well as the opportunity to receive significant additional funding from the Endowment. For more details please visit www.callofdutyendowment.org/seal_of_distinction
NOTE: If you are a 501(c) 3 seeking funding, please apply directly through C.O.D.E. As an advisory board member I cannot influence your selection. All applications are first vetted by an outside auditing agency (Deloitte). -
