I'm back on my soap box about behaviors. When I talk about behavior, I mean the way an executive acts, or how they operate tactically speaking. Too many #seniorleaders are making assumptions (or, more dangerously, not thinking at all) about how they need to show up in high-stakes contexts. As a coach, I try and flag this early to clients if I see them avoiding questions like, "What does this context demand of you?" Perhaps you’re wondering… what could be so "dangerous"? 💥 💥 (1) Misalignment between CXO and CEO about the degree to which the CXO is "operating effectively" and… 💥 (2) A disconnect about achieving excellence and leveling-up. 💥 (3) Lack of appreciation for how they’re perceived by their peers and direct reports. In any case, the CXO risks having a very short-lived tenure with the company. As a coach, I really don't want my clients to be transitioned out. I want them to call the shots about their trajectory. I want them to be proactive in shaping their careers, not reactive. Hence my emphasis on behaviors. Fellow HR Directors & VPs, who can relate? We’re officially halfway through 2024. How are you feeling about the professional goals you set in January? If you’re anything like peers I’ve spoken with recently, this might resonate with you. 🛣️You’ve come to a fork in the road.  You can continue on your journey of your nose to the grindstone, pounding out great work only to hear, “that’s great, but you’re just not there yet”.  🛣️You earn yet another certification and add more initials after your name. (I told you credentials alone are not going to get you to the next big opportunity.)  🛣️ You are multitasking, eating lunch at your desk listening to self-help podcasts, while your co-worker gets all the accolades.   🛣️Do you want to continue to sit in meetings with your tongue paralyzed just chomping at the bit to say something, instead crickets?! Then spend the rest of the day simmering and thinking would’ve, should’ve, could’ve, only to return the next day, resentful, hating your job, and blaming everyone but yourself.  There’s another path… and it’s RIGHT HERE. Check it out. 🎯You can put YOU first and take all that energy you are spending ruminating on what you know you DESERVE and put action into standing up and standing out.  🎯You decide that you’re done working endless hours and volunteering for “stretch” projects and instead get the recognition you have earned. 🎯You decide to gain awareness around how your behavior is impacting others in the room and altering their perception of you. Your emotions are in check so you come across as confident and in control.  🎯You handle difficult conversations with ease and intentionality so they can be meaningful and action-oriented versus emotional and heated. 🎯You move forward in gaining attention and visibility earning respect from both peers and direct reports so you are seen as a leader who offers powerful insights and is now in consideration for that promotion. 📣📣I hear you- it’s uncomfortable to dig deep, it’s time consuming, it’s putting yourself out there. Facing ALLLLL the fears. Sometimes misery feels better than risk. 🎯Except I suspect you’ve outgrown misery. I suspect that the pain of staying where you are just outweighs the pain of flinging yourself out of your comfort zone and breaking those self sabotaging behaviors. I’m pretty sure you’re ready to do the hard work and become the HR Director or VP  that stands out for all the right reasons. You’re ready for accountability, a safe space to vent, a place to role play tough conversations, and a place to get really vulnerable so you can go forward and kick the hell out of your next opportunity.  🎯🎯And if that’s the path for you… it’s just a click of a button to chat with me. I was going to do a big mid-year post reflecting on some of my favorites from the first half of the year (and maybe I still will) but I'm finding that I personally need to dig back in to something I made a priority for myself this year - #selfcompassion. I'd like to think my Self-Compassion is improving, but I have to be honest that it's tough to check into self-compassion, especially when we are working hard towards our goals or are working through challenges like job losses, trauma, grief, the list goes on an on. So instead of a laundry list, I'm offering a reminder and challenge to you, that I also need myself. Between stimulus and response, there's a choice...and remote leadership makes this choice more difficult to master. 😿 Loved this discussion in the new The Modern People Leader podcast interview with Brené Brown! (podcast linked in comments) Daniel Huerta, Stephen Huerta, and Dr. Brown talk about how important it is to respond productively when you're triggered...before the conversation moves off into remote vs hybrid work. But, Dr. Brown says one thing that totally grabbed me: it's more difficult to respond productively when you're leading a remote team. 🌟 "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." 🌟 Have you heard this quote before? It’s especially relevant for us as private pay therapists. If four of your closest colleagues are feeling overwhelmed, underpaid, or stuck in a low-fee model, chances are, you might be on that same path. 💸 They might say things like, “I did not enter into this field just to make money” or “I just want to help people.” I (Jamal Jones) am a faith-based, purpose-driven, heart ❤️-centered person who is kingdom-minded.
