I think this statistic from Luminate really illuminates the growth of Latin music and in particular now Musica Mexicana in the US. This will continue to have massive implications across culture throughout the US and Mexico. Luminate’s 2024 Midyear Music Report, released last week, revealed Latin music as the fastest-growing genre in the U.S. when ranking by share point change, comparing the first half of 2024 with the first half of 2023. Latin music leads all U.S. core genres in On-Demand Audio (ODA) streaming growth with +0.51 share points in the first half of 2024, powered by a +15.1% growth in ODA streaming volume. One of the biggest drivers of that growth is the rise of Regional Mexican, which is now the largest Latin subgenre in the U.S.

Separated from the US, this tiny island was still the third-largest exporter of top 10 singles worldwide in 2023. New data from the global recording industry trade group IFPI reveals that Puerto Rico — if separated from the United States and treated as a separate country — still ranked third on a list of exporters of top 10 singles worldwide last year. In fact, Puerto Rico was barely edged out for number two by Colombia.” “Perhaps unsurprisingly, the United States dominated that list, and it isn’t even close — 113 singles from the US reached the Top 10 worldwide in 2023. But Puerto Rico came in at an impressive third place with 45, and only one hit behind Colombia at 46. And that’s still miles ahead of the UK’s 29, followed by South Korea’s 16. Puerto Rico is actually an extreme powerhouse in the music industry in its own right, even when viewed in a bubble and not as an extension of the US, as a US territory. He shared some insights as to how to work and find a distributor. Filmmakers think it’s difficult to find distributors, but the truth is that you are looking for them in the wrong places. Here are 5 insights Mauricio shared with us this week about finding and working with a film distributor. 🌟 A film distributor should be involved in your film from production so they can get to know the film well and start strategizing the next steps together with the producers. 🌟 If you are hoping to find a distributor at a film festival, you are doing it wrong. You find film distributors in film markets. 🌟 Each film is different, so the distribution plan and P&A will look different from movie to movie. 🌟 30 years ago, everything was analog, and films were 6 to 10 35mm rolls. Today, everything is digital, and sending a film to a cinema can cost only $100 bucks. 🌟 Theatrical releases are the most expensive, and not all films are suited to premiere in this window; this is why some films go directly to TV or streaming platforms. Bonus 🌟 Once you work in the film industry, you won’t be able to leave it. You love it so much that you will do everything you can to stay and make it work.
