Instacart earns MRC accreditation for the grocery tech company’s impression, click and viewability metrics across several ad formats, as retail media competition heats up. the Media Rating Council (MRC) has granted accreditation for the #grocery tech company’s impression, click and viewability metrics across Sponsored Product, Display, Shoppable Display and Shoppable Video ad formats in both the U.S. and Canada. Instacart’s MRC accreditation could give its #retailmedia offering a leg up as advertisers look for clarity and consistency for their ad spend in the rapidly growing channel. Instacart has looked to offer advertisers full-funnel ad options, with top-of-funnel discovery ad products including Shoppable Display and Shoppable Video ads using rich media to drive conversion while Sponsored Product ads help brands to maximize sales and category share. Previously, Instacart partnered with third-party verification providers DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science around viewability and invalid traffic measurement. How did States Newsroom hit its milestone of reporting from all 50 states so quickly? First, a strong expansion strategy with their own team. But partnerships and collaboration were critical as well. States Newsroom now offers free, non-partisan state government coverage in 39 states, fully-funded with their own staff journalists. The other 11 are courtesy of content sharing partnerships with local outlets like Spotlight Delaware, The Texas Tribune, and CalMatters. And importantly, their collective coverage is "free to the public and other publishers without pop-ups, paywalls or ads." The collaboration and breaking down of competition has been exciting to see over the last decade. Stacker has taken a similar approach in building out its newswire. ✅🖥️ Variety (10/2): “NBCU and Charter announced a new multiyear distribution deal that will make the Peacock Premium ad-supported streaming service for “no additional cost” to Spectrum TV Select video customers. The addition of Peacock to the Spectrum TV lineup comes after Charter inked similar deals for Disney+ and ESPN+, Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max and Discovery+, Paramount Global’s Paramount+ and BET+, AMC Networks’ AMC+ and Univision’s Vix. All told, according to Charter, through the programming deals reached over the past year, the cable operator will soon provide Spectrum TV Select video customers up to $65/month of retail direct-to-consumer streaming value. Charter is understood to be paying a per-subscriber wholesale fee to the media companies for the rights to bundle their streaming services with Spectrum TV. So while the streaming services are “free” to some of Charter’s cable TV customers, it seems likely that the company will be raising monthly subscription rates to account for the additional linear-plus-streaming programming. Charter also will allow video customers to upgrade to the the ad-free Peacock Premium+ tier. The lines between linear and streaming TV have blurred, but ad sales haven’t caught up. It’s time to change that. As a recent article from TVREV wisely points out, consumers don’t differentiate between linear and streaming. They see “TV.” The industry ought to follow suit. A standardized solution that categorizes content rather than channel will help to deliver a more consistent, streamlined experience for advertisers, agencies, publishers AND consumers. Josh, while I agree with your basic point, I think that the threat you describe is a tad overstated. Indeed the great migration from linear to streaming viewing is proceeding at a slow, not a breakneck pace and increasingly, the new streamers are older and downscale viewers "fleeing" linear due mainly to cost saving goals. Nevertheless, you are right that media planners---and buyers ----should consider the relevance of the ad message to targeted consumers and in this light, think about how often to reach them. The problem is how to go about this. Take the case of upfront TV buying. If you consider national TV, all told about $40 billion of TV time in both linear and streaming will be bought in the upcoming upfront sale, which, as you know includes all dayparts, not just prime. That leaves only about$10-12 billion for so-called scatter sales, which, all too often are bought on the same basis---in large corporate blocks---not brand by brand. As a result targeting is subordinated to obtaining eyeballs at the lowest CPM for most national TV ad dollars. Add to that, the ad campaigns involved are created independently of the media buys--or don't exist as yet. Continued-----

Adolescent growing pains. As retail media grows no surprise that it faces some of the same problems legacy media has. Ad payload has been a challenge that legacy media has faced for many a year. The opportunity is to not fall into the trap that many traditional publishers have fallen into (and we can all think of examples) where it's a game of wack-a-mole for the consumer. Less is definitely more, but the data is needed to prove it. As viewer habits continue to shift on Connected TV (CTV), advertisers must do everything to not fall behind. Streaming services now account for 41.4% of TV viewing, meaning there’s a significant opportunity to rethink marketing and ad strategies in this space. Balancing ad load is a necessity. While a slight decrease in ads per hour is encouraging, it’s important to avoid overwhelming viewers. I still believe the best way to buy all media, when possible, is programmatically to enable decisioning. However, the current setup isn't efficient and frankly kinda sucks when it comes to TV. Between fraud and unnecessary middlemen that don't add value, we need a change. (Yes, Goodway Group is already on its way to a huge CTV buying overhaul that will deliver 30-40% more CTV value for brands shortly!)
