“In my role as commercial insurance broker, I come into contact with hundreds of attorneys. As a JD holder, my clients and contacts are always putting me in touch with their attorneys. Out of those hundreds, there are probably a few dozen who are "insurance attorneys." Among those dozens, there is less than a handful who approach their insurance legal work through a solid understanding of the commercial insurance world. Of course insurance companies acquiesce to the judgment of courts of competent jurisdiction, but the vast majority of insurance claims and disputes do not get to a final judicial resolution. However, when policyholder counsel enters the discussion, adjusters are often forced to escalate claims to the legal department. This drives up costs for all sides, and delays prompt resolution at a time when the policyholder is in greatest need. (No policyholder takes on the admittedly frustrating claims process unless they are compelled by dire circumstances.) Laura's dedication to her craft can be illustrated by an example. During the COVID crisis, Laura took it upon her self to keep a nationwide tally of all ongoing COVID-related lawsuits and proposed legislation. I have no doubt that this commitment to learning the developments in COVID-related law, and the rationale behind them, will give her clients a distinct advantage, compared to insurance attorneys who approach a case from only within the "four corners" of a case or policy.
