I've been part of multiple feature factories, where emphasis was put on new features to 'claim' rather than taking time to ensure we've actually solved the desired problem before moving onto the next. Composable data systems are not the quick and easy path. But they win the race in the end. Wes McKinney explains in this podcast: ❝ It’s like the tortoise and the hare. I think the modular data stack (horizontal integration) approach is definitely the tortoise approach. It requires a lot of open source diplomacy, a lot of coordination across projects, like getting people to agree to specialize and then work together toward productive ends. It’s definitely very laborious, but we’ve had our heads down just doing that. So now we’ve got really great open source orchestration solutions, we’ve got good modular computing engines, we’ve got open data lake formats, we’ve got open source file formats, we’ve got protocols for building database drivers and building distributed systems that use these open standards and protocols. All the pieces are falling into place. It takes a lot more time than building a vertically integrated system, but I think ultimately we’re doing the reverse Tower of Babel approach. We’re going to get to a place that’s more interesting and ultimately has a lot better staying power and lends itself also to better long-term maintainability. ❞ But you'll have to listen for yourself if you want to hear Wes's "Raiders of the Lost Ark" analogy 😂

Recently took on the challenge of building an app from scratch using a new tech stack by leaning into ChatGPT. The outcome was much better than I expected and I only had to deep dive into the code in a few tricky situations. https://www.jimoto.life/ (It originally started out as an app to help my in-laws find a good neighborhood to move to, but I got carried away with a few other fun features... 😅 code, layout, even the background image and color schemes are AI generated/suggested.) 📣 What a week! While I was traveling in 🇦🇷 this week and was blown away by the adoption and excitement of our NiFi customers in the region, the engineering team released DataFlow 2.9 - our biggest release yet. DataFlow 2.9 increases developer productivity through the introduction of Parameter Groups which can be shared between flow drafts. Deployments can now be configured with a Prometheus endpoint that allows scraping NiFi metrics and DataFlow’s service and deployment events and alerts now support in-app and email notifications. The cherry on the cake however is support for NiFi 2.0 in the Flow Designer. Customers can now build, test and deploy NiFi 2.0 pipelines in Cloudera DataFlow - without the need for a heavy, dedicated cluster. With NiFi 2.0 we introduced many Cloudera exclusive connectors to vector databases like Pinecone, Milvus, OpenSearch Project as well as processors that help with parsing and chunking unstructured data. With the economy slowing down, interest rates being relatively high, the election coming up, and some investors wanting a quick ROI from AI. Folks often ask me why I chose to work at Google. There are a myriad of reasons (both why I chose to come and why I choose to stay), but let me give just one example. This month I built a genomics data model for one of our customers (a research hospital) in BigQuery, Google Cloud’s world class analytics platform. Their research scientists didn’t really have any way to look at genomics data at scale, and they certainly couldn’t democratize access to the data across their organization. This data model is roughly 80 billion records and dozens of columns in one master table. The reason I cite this example is because it demonstrates the simplicity, power, and scale of BigQuery. Not once did I have to worry about configuring infrastructure. Not once did the platform not do what I asked of it, even with data of this magnitude. Not once was I blocked by technology. All I had to do was focus on solving the problem, and the technology responded to my commands, just like an aircraft responds to a pilot’s instructions. The result? The research team at this hospital can now query hundreds of genes in any configuration they’d like and return hundreds of millions of records in SECONDS. They don’t have to write any joins, they don’t have to look across 30 different tables to figure out how to bring data together. All they have to do is query one table, apply their filter criteria, choose the columns they want, and they get results very quickly. Google Cloud's world class (and globally unique) technical infrastructure allows me, as an engineer, to solve these kinds of problems at scale for our customers. I can think of no greater reward than moving the conversation past technological features, solving a real problem, and saving lives in the process. #bigquery #googlecloud
