Where do you rank on a Magic Quadrant? #AnalystRelations leaders hear this question a lot and while I understand why it continues to come up, distilling analysts to an MQ or other evaluative report doesn't capture the value analysts and a consistent AR program can bring you. Evaluations like Magic Quadrants, Waves, Leadership Compasses and Marketscapes can be incredibly valuable to the markets they serve. For emerging or really mature markets where an evaluation doesn't exist, there are other ways for end users to determine what vendors they should look at, and for vendors to see value from their relationships with analysts. 1) Use case alignment - Analyst reports often consider technical nuances and will explore a specific use case for a market. For potential buyers, these reports offer insight to understand what type of information you can include in an RFP to determine if a vendor is able to address your use case and would likely be successful in a POC. For vendors, messaging or a technological perspective that is aligned with messaging within an analyst report validates your perspective/understanding of the market. 2) Vision/future-proofing - As investors include analyst insight in their investment decisions and market opinions, vendors who work closely with analysts and prioritize having thoughtful discussions can ensure their point of view on the current status of a market and where it will/won't grow is known. You may not always agree with one another, but it gives both sides a new perspective to consider, which can have an impact on a lot of things, from future analyst reports to a vendor's product roadmap, etc. 3) Escaping the echo chamber - If you're seeking out a solution as an end user, reviewing a report or having a conversation with an analyst is a great way to get additional perspective before you sign the check (wait...do we still use checks?). For vendors, it's so easy to get caught up in internal excitement and early/often review of market reports and discussions with analysts who know your space can give you a gut check. Great analysts speak with end users and other vendors a lot and will give you some outside-in perspective. And, if you are in a space/considering a purchase in a space where there's an evaluative report, it's important to remember that this report is usually part of a body of work on that particular topic. Check out the other reports (for example - if you're in a Gartner Magic Quadrant, reading the Critical Capabilities report is invaluable) to understand the firm's overall view of the market. All of these nuances are what I love about analyst relations and why evaluations are only the tip of the iceberg.
