Yes, I'm a headshot photographer but, to be honest, I do so much more photography than that. Recently, I was hired to do a shoot for an Airbnb host in Marina. The client hired me to help the listing pop. Well, you decide. What I love about these kinds of shoots is that I'm helping a person with their side hustle. I found this interesting when I looked it up. In my research ahead of the gig, I wondered if Airbnb had any information about how well "hosts" listings performed if they had good photos versus those that didn't have good or no shots. I came across this article from Lemon One. In it, they said that optimizing images according to specific quality criteria resulted in approximately $4,141 in additional revenue for hosts on average, based on a generic Airbnb listing priced at $174 per day. So basically, the images themselves helped "hosts" get better results... I've always said that images—whether for Airbnb listings or personal branding can provide the business with greater results. Kudos, Glossier, Inc. Grant Program For Black-Owned Beauty Businesses, for at least upping the ante in terms of grant size. I get really frustrated seeing the proliferation of female founder grant programs/pitch competitions with teensy weensy amounts, where we're expected to be grateful and compete for crumbs, while the VC funding banquet lavishes millions, nay, billions on white bro founders. Glossier is awarding four $50,000 grants and one former grantee $100,000 Alumni Award - at least that's not nothing. "We're seeing videos on social media of children as young as seven using anti-aging serums" It's about time that there is legislation put in place to protect kids from the beauty industry (and to help inform parents that a life spent in Sephora is not a life well spent!), albeit this is just in California currently. Teens / tweens accounted for 46% of the growth of the facial skincare category in 2023, and whilst a level of understanding your skin and health is key, this is surely an over focus. "But the multi-billion dollar beauty industry in the U.S. is failing to take meaningful action to address the issue, and companies are profiting off of kids who are unknowingly buying and using products that aren’t meant for them. Kids don’t need anti-aging products, and AB 2491 will protect children and preteens from the potential harms of using products that may lead to short- or long-term skin challenges they wouldn’t otherwise have.” I hope this bill gets passed. Archetype and persona is a great way to handle all those tricky internal brand conversations when it’s hard to make a call whether the sneakerhead or the athlete is the target consumer. I’ve found positioning each as a persona and giving them nuances helps different teams and seasonal work targeting each, but having that overarching archetype removes any confusion over who the larger target really is. #marketresearch #consumerresearch #brandstrategy

When was AUTHENTICITY ever out? Hmm. I believe AUTHENTIC PURPOSE remains front and center in the minds of today's modern, conscious consumer - that will never change. Just look at Patagonia, IMPOSSIBLE Foods, Dove, Ben+Jerry's, E.L.F. Beauty, to name a few. And to say AI is trending is like saying oxygen is trending... technology will always enable us to get messages out faster, better, cheaper. This recap from the BrandStorytelling Elevate summit, by Brian Newman is a thing of beauty. But, buckle up… as I have a few thoughts from the marketing side of things. (From the Key Takeaways section. Click there first for context.) The distribution thing & the C-Suite thing are both massive blockers for brands. However, I believe those can bust wide open if brands listen and learn from the younger audiences. These things are all inherently tied from a brand marketing perspective. As soon as brands stop dismissing them as “lazy” and start treating them as the lifeblood of their (near)future business, the distribution channels will come into better view. The problem right now is most every brand is still relying on channels that were popularized 10 to 20 years ago. And we’ve sold our souls to the likes of traditional social media outlets, who don’t truly care about the customer experience. They only care about scraping our data so they can turn around and resell our data back to more brands. It’s a doom loop that needs to be broken. The only saving grace from today’s traditional media outlets is YouTube. That’s the number one outlet for today’s audience. But too many people only think of YouTube as a repository for old content. Very few are leveraging it as a storytelling hub (and one that highly indexes within traditional paid search, which is also starting to wane for younger audiences). In fact, ask your kids where they search and it’s likely to be YouTube or ChatGPT. (See why Google is now pumping a ton into traditional broadcast with their Gemini commercial?) It’s all connected… except for your next generation of customers. They are disconnecting from our Boomer outlets. This statement right here should be eye-opening: “As the leader of Rock the Vote told the audience – younger audiences have given up on established media – meaning news outlets, but also most established media companies. They’re also pretty tired of the established system across the board – our politics, our leadership, and so on. They do care about issues, and they want brands – and the people they follow, creatives, etc. – to stand for something.
