What I appreciate more than sharing this post about AI displacement of human writers is that LinkedIn offered to write this comment with its AI. :D > ... the internet is finite. And so too is the sum of every word on every page of every book ever written. So what happens when the last pamphlet, papyrus and prolegomenon have been digitised and the model is still not perfect? What happens when we run out of words? The date for that linguistic apocalypse has already been set. Researchers announced in June that we can expect this to take place between 2026 and 2032 “if current LLM development trends continue”. At that point, “Models will be trained on datasets roughly equal in size to the available stock of public human text data.” https://lnkd.in/d5KkTt4a

#WritingInSTEM requires knowing your audience, having a clear idea of what they already know and what they need to know. This is fairly simple for something like an email or a lab notebook, for which the audience is one a very small number of people. It is more complicated for a publication or presentation. Here, Prof. Thomson offers some guidance on how to write for your audience in order to leave them feeling smarter and more informed after they have read your text.

It NEVER fails. It's as predictable as PR companies inventing meaningless embargoes in an effort to try to make their clients' information seem more important than it actually is. When dudes like Cooper eventually show us who they are, they try to use their children as human shields, crying that they can't be misogynists because they have daughters. It shows not only how little they understand the lived experience of anyone but themselves but also how little they think of women that they will use the fact that they had a female child and didn't disown that child for being female as some kind of proof of character. Congratulations. You did the barest minimum as a parent and all you accomplished with your comment is making everyone else feel sorry for your daughters. Perhaps most egregious is that any PR professional would have advised Cooper not to mention his daughters in his "apology" had he cared to consult one before issuing it. Again, though, that would require listening and actually considering how he could change. Other men; the bar continues to be SO LOW for us that we're still digging to find it apparently. This is who we become when we put in zero effort to learn about what life is like for the other half. It's not the job of women to educate us. We aren't children, much less their children. It's our responsibility to avail ourselves of the plentiful resources, many of them free, that are out there. Ironically, a few days in a "skirt" (getting somewhat of a grasp on what life is like for women in our society) would do us men so much good.

The tool I use the most when I would otherwise have writer's block is this: I write down everything I DO know about the project or assignment. Sometimes it's little more than my name, the idea or pitch, and maybe placeholders for "hed and dek." It is a super effective trick at getting started when I am stuck. Part 2 in discussion of Associated Press Stylebook's "obesity" entry. (see part 1 at https://lnkd.in/gFn8QyF9) And AP does not take care in discussing body mass index (BMI). It says simply, “Many experts acknowledge that BMI is a flawed metric because it does not directly measure body fat, but say it remains a useful and convenient guide.” That explanation does not encapsulate why BMI is a flawed tool (https://lnkd.in/ebaw3DQm). Not only is it bad at what the health establishment uses it to do, but it has a racist history. As professor Sabrina Strings says, “Obesity science has always been a (racist) form of pseudoscience that relies on statistical correlations based on a limited portion of humanity" (https://lnkd.in/eTymQTva). AP handles so many topics admirably and with nuance–like discussing the problems of bias in AI systems in its artificial intelligence entry. I wish it took the same care to explain why relying on BMI (and therefore the categories of “obese” and “overweight” altogether) is problematic. Similarly, explaining who and for what BMI remains useful and convenient would be helpful. Overall, I recommend AP revise this section to provide more context and more appropriate guidance for journalists trying to cover higher-weight people. This is a pressing need, especially given the increasing coverage of drugs like Wegovy. In the meantime, writers and editors should look to language preferences from the people they’re writing about. For example, a report by NAAFA - National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance and researcher Pamela Mejia on fat bias in the news has some recommendations for journalists, one of which is “Avoid the ‘o’ words (obesity and overweight) and include other ways to talk about fat people.” https://lnkd.in/ei37A-Ru For people who are interested in learning more about this kind of inclusive language, I recommend the ACS Inclusivity Style Guide’s section on body size (https://lnkd.in/eQN5fFG2).
