How can you lead with empathy in Higher Education?
First and foremost, we are all humans, which means we are all limited to our own experiences, capacities, abilities, learning, and volition. Thus, we are all biased and prone to further biases. Therefore, we must build checks and balances into all processes to ensure that decisions and behavior are the result of an intersection of organizational values, mission, and strategy…not limited perspective, personal gain, misunderstanding, and failure to obtain all the relevant data.

How can you develop a timeline to ensure your team meets deadlines?
Always build in extra time for the unexpected, the unplanned, the yet-to-be-learned. Use PM tools to collect data about the process, timeline, and adherence to the plans to facilitate continuous improvement cycles. Over time, confidence in time estimates will grow as unexpected factors impacting the projects become anticipated and controlled.

How can you use advising to help students achieve their goals?
Each advising session is a unique experience requiring a collaborative, professional, positive relationship between mentor/teacher and learner/student. Each party must bring their full participation and experience to the table to fulfill their role. As both participants have their own life experiences, hopes, faults, and concerns, good advising acknowledges the personal and sociohistorical contexts that impact the relevance of advice. A good advisor understands that the advisee is not their protege. A good advisee is open to thinking beyond the one possible trajectory they have in mind as the advisor guides the pursuit of the best of myriad possible future paths. The advising relationship is dynamic and mutual, developing depth over time.

Drs. Kimberley Davis, William Torrence, and Wendy Kubasko's research proposal titled “Developing Teaching Candidates’ Self-Efficacy Through Cross-Cultural Strategies” has been accepted by the American Educational Research Association (AERA) at the 2024 AERA Annual Conference, Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: A Call to Action in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, April 11-14, 2024. Using feedback from district partners, this study examined teacher candidates from a Historically Black College in a southern state's perceptions of pre- and post-participating in a classroom management workshop employing cross-cultural strategies. The preliminary results indicate that teacher candidates demonstrated a greater self-efficacy for addressing whole-class behavior management versus individual student dynamics. Results from the post-data collection will inform future training for teacher candidates and mentor teachers and will be used as a foundation for program transformation with district partners.

We invite contributions for an upcoming edited textbook titled "Advancing Equity for Anti-Racist Child Welfare: Navigating the Intersection of the Profession, Policy, Practice, and Research to be published by Cognella, Inc. As a call to action the co-authors Belinda Smith, PhD and Christa Gilliam, PhD are seeking abstracts for chapters that provide practical examples (conceptual or empirical) that examine and promote advocacy, collaboration, and a commitment to implement anti-racist principles and strategies for achieving equity in the field of child welfare.
